GoldenEye 007 Reloaded Review
GoldenEye on the Wii was at times great, occasionally a bit ropey, but mostly quite alright. The same is true of Reloaded on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, a graphically enhanced port of the original with revamped multiplayer. The problem is that the FPS market on these consoles is significantly stronger than it is on the Wii, and as such GoldenEye 007 Reloaded resides a considerable way down the pecking order.GoldenEye 007 isn't a scene for scene remake of the illustrious Rare game, instead basing itself on the movie while simultaneously bringing everything into the modern era. Pierce Brosnan is gone, replaced by Daniel Craig, and with him comes the brutal Bond we saw in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. There's also far less emphasis on gadgets this time around, with Bond much more adept with guns and his fists. Bond basically has to stop the bad guys, using a whole armoury of firepower, stealth and a smartphone.GoldenEye feels a lot like Modern Warfare - largely due to the snap-to aiming and the supply of high-tech guns - but it's not a carbon copy.

Review: GoldenEye 007: Reloaded
Though not as ground-breaking as the original or as well-tuned as many modern shooters, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded proves that some shooters always look good in a tuxedo. If you're going to make a remake of one of the most beloved video games of all time, stripping out the original story, characters, health system, soundtrack, weapons, and iconic multiplayer maps may seem like a bad first step. But as familiar and fun as those elements are, developer Eurocom understood that in order for GoldenEye: Reloaded to compete with the trappings of modern shooters -- like cover, secondary weapons, and iron sight -- it would have to modernize. The resulting FPS is both dripping in nostalgia and feels tethered to the original's spy-saves-the-world premise. While never achieving the ground-breaking highs of its predecessor, GoldenEye: Reloaded has enough geeky moments of familiarity to make it something (slightly) more than just another generic shooter. GoldenEye 007 initially hit the Wii in 2010 to mostly positive reviews, and this PS3/Xbox 360 version is pretty much the same game with a few modes added and a better engine.

Gamers who had the fortune of experiencing the Nintendo 64 era firsthand no doubt harbor fond memories of staying up until ungodly hours shooting their friends in the face in GoldenEye 007. GoldenEye 007: Reloaded for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 repackages last year's Wii remake of the classic shooter, but with the addition of upgraded graphics and extra play modes. The results make for a rather addictive experience. With an almost entirely new story, Reloaded won't exactly get your nostalgia engine running -, but you will find some well-placed nods to the N64 adventure (you can still shoot that one guard while he's on the can, for instance, but you can no longer snipe his hat off first). But while Reloaded greatly deviates from its source material, lovers of the original will appreciate how the game plays with your expectations, making for some interesting takes on classic scenes. The famous dam jump from the first level, for instance, pays due homage to its roots while throwing in a new twist that makes the whole affair feel fresh and unexpected. For those playing solo, the main story campaign offers plenty of fun, though it ends a little too quickly.

When GoldenEye 007 was released for the Wii last year, it proved that it is possible to successfully reimagine a classic. By combining the spy elements that made the Nintendo 64 original so engaging with modern amenities, it created a great experience that didn't use on nostalgia to be entertaining. One year later, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded comes to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with updated visuals, as well as a few other changes, and it remains an enticing change of pace from other shooters. Thoughtful missions force you to complete diverse objectives as you slink through enemy territory, and when you're spotted, Reloaded transforms into a hectic action game with razor-sharp mechanics and a variety of deadly weapons. GoldenEye 007: Reloaded doesn't rely on the memories of an aged shooter to be great; it earns that distinction on its own merits. GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is entirely different from the Nintendo 64 version, but that doesn't mean it has turned its back on everything that made the original distinct. James Bond is a world-class spy, and both games dramatize this fascinating profession by putting you through the rigors of globe-trotting espionage.

GoldenEye 007: Reloaded only lives twiceWhen I think of Rare's 1997 GoldenEye 007 on the N64, I think of four-player split-screen multiplayer. I also think of Half-Life coming out a year later and me totally jumping ship from the N64 to the PC. Despite Half-Life being thoroughly better, then, GoldenEye 007 was both massive and iconic - a genuine landmark moment in gaming history. It's also the gift that keeps on giving: Rare, EA, and now Activision have all had a go at riding the coattails of its monumental success for well over a decade.Next up, then, is GoldenEye 007: Reloaded - a remake of last year's remake of the original movie tie-in game from 1997. It's starting to get a little bit too Droste effect for my tastes.Still, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded features four-player split-screen play. When do you see that on the Xbox 360 and PS3? There's also 16-player online play, and Eurocom is promising new maps, modes, characters, and weapons - it's going to be more than just Team Deathmatch and Domination, apparently, though presumably those two modes will both be in it.GoldenEye: Reloaded also features challenge arenas, dubbed MI6 operations.
