Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars

I don't know about you, but that list just doesn't look right to me. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something just seems out of place. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Final Fantasy. Pack up your giant swords and black mage hats and move along. Seriously, though, the answer is obvious – amongst titles involving magic, dragons, demons, and overly dramatic, drawn-out face-offs that only the Japanese can deliver, why would I mention a series of modernized first-person shooters? I confess, upon starting Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars for the first time I didn't know much of anything about it going in. Imagine my surprise, then, that what used to be a tactical FPS has become a turn-based strategy game for my brand-new 3DS. Whether that's a pro or con really depends on the type of gamer you are; I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn't in for another handheld FPS-with-touch-screen-controls, but longtime fans of the series are likely to balk at the completely new direction. It's still fortunate for all of us, though, that despite removing the \"FPS” from Ghost Recon, Ubisoft hasn't removed the \"tactical” part.

Ghost Recon Shadow Wars

I have to give Ubisoft credit for letting one of its established franchises break out of its comfort zone. Ghost Recon has always been about pulling off ridiculous stunts with super-elite troops and their near-future technology, and this turn-based strategy title captures that fantasy as well as any of the series' first-person shooters.Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars plays more like Front Mission than Advanced Warfighter. Your squad of up to six Ghosts takes turns moving and attacking with their foes (ultranationalist Russians [again], if you must know. And let that be the last we speak of the utterly throwaway plot). The action may not be as fast-paced as in a big-budget HD console shooter, but these Ghosts prevail in no less dramatic fashion for the fact that you have time to plan your strategies. The rules for cover, supporting fire, lines of sight, and movement are simple but smart. You don't have to memorize a set of arcane formulas and exceptions to understand how things work. At the same time, the rules promote realistic tactics like overlapping fields of fire, bounding from cover to cover, and terrain control. I found myself using many of the same tactics in Shadow Wars as I would in any squad-based shooter, which goes a long way toward selling the Ghost Recon setting.

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars 3DS Review

Like the special agents the game draws its name from, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is deceptive. It's not a shooter, and it's not about any sort of Ghosts that you might have come to know from the other games in the franchise. No, Shadow Wars is an entertaining turn-based strategy title, one that's fun enough to make it worth playing through despite a forgettable story and an ultra-cliché, G.I. Joe wannabe cast. Get More GhostsFamiliarity with the Ghost Recon franchise is totally unnecessary in Shadow Wars. Its visual aesthetic is that of a cartoon, with characters every bit as silly as you'd expect from that description. Sadly, though, they're not well animated or voiced to sell this idea. Instead, the characters are one-note stereotypes, throwing out eye roll-inducing one liners. It's like instead of trying to write interesting characters, they just knew they needed to have "the cool sniper" or "heavy weapons guy," and just cashed the idea in without too much thought after slapping a Ghost Recon name on the box for some brand recognition. Next time, let's just call it G.I. Joe.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars Review

Folks familiar with the Ghost Recon series may be accustomed to tactical military action from a third-person viewpoint, but they are in for a surprise with Shadow Wars. This is a turn-based combat game that plays out on tiled maps from a more or less bird's-eye view. In every mission, you assault your enemies and accomplish your objective while ensuring that none of your squad members perish. Success requires careful maneuvering and a strong knowledge of each soldier's unique and diverse capabilities. The difficulty ramps up smoothly during the very lengthy campaign, but even in the early going, one bad choice can result in a failed mission. This creates an engaging sense of tension, spurring you to be smart and use the richly detailed environments to your advantage. In addition to the campaign, there are a host of interesting one-off scenarios, as well as a two-player competitive mode that, while intriguing, can only be played using one system. This oddity notwithstanding, Shadow Wars is a great new entry in the Ghost Recon series that delivers tens of hours of exciting and engrossing tactical action. Missions in Shadow Wars play out from the aforementioned elevated perspective.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars Review

So here it is, the real gem of the 3DS launch line-up. It's not a new Mario game, sadly, nor is it a racing game, or even a portable version of Street Fighter. No, our triumphant star is actually a thoughtful little strategy game, and a turn-based one to boot. Bet you didn't see that one coming.Actually, some of you may have done - because Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is the work of Julian Gollop, creator of the X-Com series - you know, that game old farts like me are always harping on about. If you're younger than 25 or so then there's a good chance that neither name will mean much to you, but that doesn't matter. All you really need to know is that this is a turn-based military affair from Ubisoft Sofia, one that finds you ordering your small band of elite troops about a 3D, grid-based battlefield. It's essentially a board game version of The A-Team, only without the need for dice or a burly Mohawked chap with aerophobia.Despite the familiar branding, this bears scant resemblance to previous Ghost Recon titles. The action is viewed from an elevated perspective, giving a broad outlook on the combat.
