Forza Horizon Review
The Forza Motorsport franchise, like Gran Turismo, has become very set in its ways. Save for those entries that bring the series from one console generation to the next, you can count on each new release to deliver on a solid simulation racing experience that does nothing to substantially shake up the established formula. Oftentimes what this can mean is the average racing gaming fan -- those like myself who are unlikely to pick up on subtle physics improvements or other, very nuanced changes -- may not notice anything new beyond different cars or tracks. Forza Horizon stands in stark contrast to the average Forza sequel. Not only was it developed by a team other than Turn 10, which has been responsible for every entry in the series to-date, it features an open-world environment to explore, easily the most significant change the Forza series has ever seen. As a spin-off of the series, Horizon was free to really shake things up. What has not been altered is the core of the racing itself; the game uses an improved version of the physics engine seen in Forza 4, and it shows.

The effortless quality of the Forza Motorsport series has never found itself wanting for much, but if there's one ding on an otherwise pristine bodywork it's a lack of personality. The clinical professionalism of the early games gave way to an unpleasantly smug Jeremy Clarkson in the otherwise marvellous fourth game: despite the obvious brilliance of the stuff under the hood, Turn 10 has always struggled to imbue its work with a true identity.A similar argument could be levelled at Forza Horizon, Playground Games' début attempt to transpose the beautiful physics and vehicular voyeurism of Microsoft's premier driving series into an open-world arcade burn. At least the smugness has gone, replaced with a slightly dated jaunt to Colorado's fictional Horizon festival, complete with cringe-worthy cutscenes, banging tunes and wittering radio DJs. Thankfully, though, Playground has also brought across Forza Motorsport's one truly important characteristic: class.Forza Horizon is a driving game that shoehorns the tried and tested Turn 10 physics model into a compact section of open American roads, and what a game it is.
Forza Horizon
If you're wondering why Burnout Paradise isn't in that headline, then you already get the point. Forza Horizon is a casual open-world reinterpretation of the familiar Forza Motorsport franchise, but it's hardly the first game of its kind. Fortunately, Playground Games takes this into account, finding inspiration and taking some of the best elements that current open-environment racers already offer. As a first installment, Forza Horizon surprisingly executes its ideas well, though several of them need more mileage in their development. The Horizon Festival is a racer's paradise, where fame, fortune, and fun collide in the sprawling, auburn landscape in the heart of Colorado. Darius Flynt, for the past three years, has won the prestigious Horizon Festival Championships and has successfully built an international brand on his name alone, along with an inflated ego. It's about time that someone like you, a no-name outsider, show him a thing or two about humility. Toward this path to stardom, you need to prove your racing prowess by placing well in various events and earning enough points to acquire the next colored bracelet, much like climbing the ladder of martial art belts, which grants you access to the next, more difficult tier of events. As with the main Forza entries, you earn more credits for turning off racing assists, like the familiar suggested racing line and rewind feature, and you can automatically upgrade or downgrade vehicles to meet any entry restrictions.
Forza Horizon
Although Forza Horizon is an offshoot of the sim racer, it captures a lot of what makes the base series notable. Car nuts, decal artists, and those looking for an intense racing experience will all feel at home in Horizon's frontiers. Despite this game's homage to the original Forza, it also strikes out on its own. The open world format allows Horizon to carve out its own niche in the larger Forza franchise, but it's a title with its own boundaries. In some ways, Forza Horizon gives racers the best of both worlds. A serious love of cars is married with a more accessible approach to the racing itself and progressing in the game. While hardcore drivers will still find the upper-echelon cars a challenge with all the assists off, those less skilled can still dial back the car handling at the expense of winning fewer credits at race's end. Regardless of how you like to drive, however, Horizon makes finding a race easy. Horizon Events tiers unlock by earning different colored wristbands, and while the game's light story and characters are cheesy, they also open up other kinds of races. Showcase events are races against other machines like planes, Street Race Hubs are easy places to grind for cash, and you can race against Rival ghost cars from online profiles.
Forza Horizon Review
There's something oddly romantic about Forza Horizon. Gone are the real-life circuits of Motorsport, replaced by a gorgeous stretch of the American West. Sweeping praries and looming peaks set a grand stage, and a persistent sense of competition keeps the vast expanse from feeling lonely. Add in Forza's famously stellar driving physics, and you have a game that makes it a joy to hit the asphalt and roam wherever the road takes you. The experience isn't as refined as its predecessors, but Horizon is an exciting and adventurous spinoff just the same. Horizon's setting is a fictional interpretation of the Colorado countryside, with the Rockies on one end of the map and an imposing desert on the other. In between is a rolling mesh of highways, dirt roads, and small towns. It's a beautiful landscape, where varied geography and a full day-night cycle combine to create some impressive vistas. Moments like cresting a hill at 150mph just as the sun begins to rise are a frequent occurrence, leading you to throw your car around one corner after another in a fit of automotive wanderlust. Of course, it's not all free-form exploration.
