Football Manager 2012 Review

UK REVIEW--Football Manager veterans know that the series is all about evolution, not revolution. It has been evolving steadily for almost two decades now to become so vast and complex that it's not really an entry-level game anymore. Even experienced players who have missed a few iterations are likely to find the sheer depth and number of options daunting. Everything is in here--from dealing with agents and mollycoddling egotistical star players to fending off scoop-hunting journalists--as you try to mold your team of virtual hit-and-hopers into a trophy-harvesting machine. This year's introduction of a much-needed tutorial mode helps to steer newcomers through the labyrinthine options and is a great addition. One area of improvement has to do with the transfer market, with the contract system being tweaked to streamline the process. There are so many elements to consider--duration of contract, win bonuses, appearance bonuses, goal bonuses, promotion bonuses, agent's fees, relegation release clauses, non-promotion release clauses, minimum fee release clauses, promotion bonuses, loyalty bonuses, sell-on fees, and a whole metric boatload of other stuff--any or all of which might be demanded by the player.

Football Manager 2012 Review

Certain franchises inspire devotion through consistent quality and, often, enough little quirks that require defending them against the unbelievers. Football Manager is one such series, demanding a lot from its players and giving so much back in return. To the uninitiated it is still a load of text and numbers resembling a flashy spreadsheet, but to aficionados it's a window into an imaginary world where even the likes of Blyth Spartans have a chance of rising to the dizzying heights of the Premier League. Or maybe just the Blue Square Premier if things don't go quite so well. What other series would inspire someone to dress up in a suit when they get to the FA Cup final, or to spit at the screen when they suffered a particularly scandalous reverse away to Bolton? Who in their right mind would dress up in full Liverpool kit, including shin pads, in order to manage that particular club?Ask any dedicated fan and they'll have plenty of stories of when they did something a bit crazy, or when they went mental and started shouting at the screen. Just like this kid.So when Sports Interactive decides to make some (for the series) radical changes, it needs to remember it's dealing with some pretty hardcore lunatics who find critical fault with every flaw and demand blood vengeance when they concede too many goals off corners.

Football Manager 2012 Review

The problem with approaching any game with the scope of the Football Manager series is that you're never 100 percent certain that the snazzy new feature you're making 'ooh' noises at is one that's unique to this iteration, such is the scale of Sports Interactive's baby. And with a game that has no figurehead to reclothe and no hi-res textures to polish up, how do you make the most detailed, no-statistics-left-behind management game even more complex? And is complexity even the end game? I have a theory whereby the clothing and demeanour of the male model on the front of a Football Manager game dictates how revolutionary the title is. For example, in 2005 our man was wearing a functional padded jacket a la Harry Redknapp – a man who clearly dressed in a hurry. And sure enough, that year was one in which FM was in a brutal race to the shelves with rival Championship Manager, after mummy Eidos and daddy Sports Interactive had gone their separate ways. Jump forward to 2007's box art and the game was rocking a Mourinho long woollen coat and tie combo.
