Final Fantasy XIII-2

True story: The first time I popped Final Fantasy XIII-2 in my PS3, my dad—who's staying with me during the winter—wandered into the living room while the opening cut-scene was playing. After a minute of flashy acrobatics, the game's bad guy, Caius, appeared on screen, to which my dad says, \"Oh, who's that chick? She's hot!” Despite the sheer awkwardness of that moment, I couldn't help but wear a knowing smile on my face. Those of us exposed to JRPGs on a regular basis tend to forget sometimes about things like the hyper-androgynous characters, but all it takes is the confusion of a less-experienced bystander to remind us once in a while of how ridiculous these things can be. I begin with this story, in addition to sharing my amusing moment of discomfort with you dear readers, to set a particular tone for FFXIII-2: that of familiarity and predictability. There's very little to this game that you haven't seen before in a myriad of other JRPGs, and nothing that you haven't seen before if you've played FFXIII. That's not to say that there isn't anything to like here; you simply need to know your own preferences well, because like its predecessor, FFXIII-2 will be divisive as hell.

Final Fantasy 13-2 Review

What's in a name? In the case of Final Fantasy XIII-2, the answer is quite a lot, actually. Consider it. Say it out loud. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a name that prompts players to stack a laundry list of questions.Unlike other Final Fantasy games - whose worlds, stories and characters have no connection with their numerical forebears - Final Fantasy XIII-2 continues on from the storyline of Final Fantasy XIII, a game that took players the better part of 48 hours to finish and then rinse completely for extra content. Without having played its predecessor, diving into the plot of FFXIII-2 is like starting The Wire halfway through its third season - you won't know what the hell is going on. It doesn't help that FFXIII was divisive. While the game has shifted well over 2 million copies, there's been a vocal backlash against its linear structure, with many fans complaining that things didn't really get going until the last few stages. So there are a couple of conundrums: If you're new to this genre or series, is Final Fantasy XIII-2 a good entry point? And if you're a long-time fan of the series burned by XIII, should you give its sequel a wide berth? As is the way with Square Enix's flagship JRPG series, the answers are rather complex.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Review

Final Fantasy XIII-2's box art features the indomitable Lightning, looking strong and feminine in her tough-as-nails armor and flowing skirt of feathers. You remember Lightning, of course: she spent the majority of Final Fantasy XIII trying to release her sister Serah from a crystalline prison. Don't let that gorgeous portrait of the daunting heroine fool you, however. She has a part to play in this direct sequel, but it's Serah's turn in the spotlight now. Serah's not the powerhouse personality her sister is, but that doesn't keep Final Fantasy XIII-2 from delivering a satisfying mix of poignant storytelling and exciting action. That isn't to say Final Fantasy XIII-2 is as epic an adventure as you may have expected. The story isn't long as far as Japanese role-playing games go--maybe 25 hours for a standard playthrough. There are reasons to linger or return if you're the completionist type, but the length is a consideration for series fans hoping for a Final Fantasy-sized adventure. If those 25 hours were jam-packed with challenging action and dramatic cutscenes, perhaps you wouldn't notice the story's brevity. Alas, a lengthy fetch quest makes the game drag considerably, as does a protracted platforming sequence that causes the pace to chug as you near the conclusion, right when you'd expect the tempo to take off.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Preview)

Square Enix looks to address criticisms with Final Fantasy XIII-2Article contains spoilers relating to the end of Final Fantasy XIII.SquareEnix, a Japanese company best known for its Japanese role-playing games, had just one Japanese game to show at E3. While androgynous teens and silly haircuts remain firmly intact, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is clearly influenced by the likes of Mass Effect and Fable. While this might not sit well with staunch supporters of the vegetating JRPG genre, this western inspiration addresses many of the problems critics had with FFXIII.The E3 demo welcomes two new characters; Serah - Lightning's little sister - and the mysterious Noel, a scruffy haired youth with a distinct look of Squall about him. Specialising in magic and melee respectively, we see the pair scrapping with a colossal golem known as Atlas. I'm not sure what his beef was, but he's a sizeable obstruction in Serah and Noel's adventure to find Lightning, who is presumed dead after the events of FFXIII.Changes to the battle system are subtle - not quite the shake up I was hoping for - but some interesting new features have been brought to the table. Let me use this opportunity to get something off my chest: the battle system in FFXIII is fantastic - those that didn't like it simply didn't get it.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Preview)

Welcome to the Interrogation Room, GameSpy's signature pre-release game coverage format. Here, a GameSpy editor (typically one who's relatively in-the-dark about the game in question) grills his peers for information on a hotly anticipated game -- hopefully with more entertaining results than the typical boilerplate preview would provide. Eric Neigher, Contributing Editor: Ah, Final Fantasy XIII-2. What can we say about this game, and its federal tax-form-esque title, that hasn't already been said about re-runs of Diff'rent Strokes? That is: doesn't it feel a lot like we've seen this one before? David Wolinsky, Contributing Editor: Yes, but even worse: I can't pin down when I saw this episode in the first place. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is so indiscernible from its recent predecessors that I can't be even be sure this is actually a new game. Almost everything about it felt by-the-numbers, from the J-Pop soundtrack with inspirational lyrics, to the ho-hum steampunk setting. The demo's most interesting wrinkles, sadly, were that you could recruit enemies to join your party (I got a flamethrowing pepper to hang out with me!), and that the map was real handy. Those really shouldn't be the things that stick out in my mind in a role-playing game, particularly Final Fantasy.
