Dream Trigger 3D

I don't really understand the title... Dream Trigger 3D? I understand the 3D part, but I don't really get the trigger part. Most games give an indication of what they are in their title: Dragon Quest, Pokémon, Gitaroo Man. On the other hand, I know nothing about triggering dreams to shoot ever-changing enemies in 3D. Maybe it's just me. But hell, I suppose like any good shooter, the title might not have to make sense. I don't know what a Parodius is (or after all these years, a Galaga for that matter). So what is it then? It's a sort of classic, high-score-seeking gaming missile, that's what (maybe that's what they meant by the trigger). The actual game is like mixing Rez and Lumines: A bar slides across the screen in time to the music, and if a space is touched by the stylus, it will light up along with the spaces immediately around it. Enemies will usually show up as balls of light on the top screen, but others will only appear as different-colored dots on the bottom screen. They can only be defeated by touching them on the screen when the musical bar slides across and then, using the energy picked up from uncovering those baddies, you can blast them out of the sky... so long as you have enough stored-up energy to attack.

Dream Trigger 3D Review

It's a fine line between "new gameplay mechanic" and "gimmick". Dream Trigger 3D attempts to go for the former with its unorthodox approach to shooters. And while it is an extremely colorful and interesting shooter, its one note song tends to move it towards the gimmick category. Dream Trigger 3D isn't your average shooter. For starters, your enemies are invisible. To unveil them you have to drop sonar pings using the touch screen. Once the enemies appear you can swoop in and "fire" at them, which means ramming your butterfly/reticule/whatever at the enemies while holding the left shoulder button. Dream Trigger 3D Video It takes a few tries to figure out. Dream Trigger 3D's unhelpful tutorial and unique design give it a steep initial learning curve. But once you "get it" it's easy to get into the flow of the game. When you're in the zone each level in Dream Trigger 3D becomes one continuous movement. It's a fun, non-traditional approach to shooters. The biggest problem is that the game never builds on its design. After you get into the groove, Dream Trigger becomes routine, and the levels just kind of fly by. Sure the enemies become more abundant, but the difficulty curve is too gradual and no new gameplay elements come into the equation.

Dream Trigger 3D

A wire-frame dolphin swims through a pale green sea past translucent microorganisms. A swallow circles a fiery ball of light made up entirely of small glowing squares. A targeting reticle inspired by space combat games of yesteryear skims over a city of neon geometric shapes. The stages of Dream Trigger 3D offer a variety of visual delights, and each one is complemented by a layered audio track that changes in response to your actions. Your sweeps of the stylus reveal the enemies that hunt you on the top screen where you must vanquish them while dodging their attacks and grabbing power-ups. This unique pairing of mechanics is initially disorienting, but once you get the hang of it, you find that Dream Trigger 3D is a mildly challenging, mildly entertaining shoot-'em-up. It tickles your imagination but doesn't offer much depth, not unlike a pleasant reverie that fades in the light of the morning. Like any good dream, Dream Trigger 3D is full of vivid visual stimuli. The standout elements are the backgrounds, which make great use of color and 3D. Though the field of play remains static, many backgrounds are dynamic and create the sensation of traveling through a forest or speeding down digital pipelines.
