Dragon's Dogma

Dragon's Dogma is one of those rare \"have your cake and eat it, too” games, where the inspired designers take elements from several different genres and mash them together. In this case, open-world RPGs and hack-and-slash action games are the source materials. It's not perfect, but its arsenal of unusual party mechanics and combat flourishes make it worthy of any virtual sword-swinger's time. Dragon's Dogma is strictly a single-player experience, though AI companions called pawns help sell the concept that your hero isn't alone in the sprawling fantasy world of Gransys. You create your own pawn in the beginning of the game, selecting its gender, tweaking its appearance, and choosing its class. As you travel the world, your pawn soaks up and shares information about the environments, quests, and enemies it's exposed to. In a battle against a cyclops, for instance, your companion might recommend stunning the creature with a blast of lightning. Walk near a beach, and your pawn may drop hints that valuable items may have washed ashore. If you're connected online, you can hire pawns that other players have created, and they'll join your game with whatever knowledge, gear, and skills they've already acquired.

Dragon's Dogma (Preview)

Had you shown me Dragon's Dogma without telling me who made it I would have assumed it was a western developed game. It looks like a game aiming to mix Elder Scrolls style open world exploration and Dragon Age-like combat. However, no one who plays the Dragon's Dogma demo on the show floor at this year's E3 would make that same assumption. It plays, sound, and feels like a game made by a Japanese team with an affinity for and familiarity with Monster Hunter. My demo began with the protagonist, oddly named Arisen, exploring a cave with an AI controlled partner. The UI looks like it belonged in a Dragon Age game. As we winded our way through the cave, my AI partner consistently blocked the path -- never for more than a few seconds, but just enough to impede smooth movement. The environment was strewn with goblin-like enemies and all kinds of loot. Combat takes place in real time and the demo allowed me to issue basic commands to my team -- help, attack, and fall back. I had two basic attacks at my disposal and a four special attacks that could be accessed by holding down the right bumper. The left bumper raised my character's shield turning him into a walk impenetrable fortress.
