    Divinity II: Ego Draconis

Combat and character development separate role-playing games from the adventure genre. Divinity II: Ego Draconis would have been better off as an adventure game. Its world and background fiction are top-notch, expertly fleshed out by dozens of in-game books and extensive voiced dialogue. The third-person action, on the other hand, is designed and implemented so poorly that every encounter is a chore. The care poured into the setting is evident in the art as well as the rich, detailed fiction. The extensive world is crammed full of little touches, from skeletons jutting out of ancient cave-ins to bloodstains in a torture chamber that horribly detail the order in which the devices were used. Every house, every mini-dungeon, and every abandoned shrine in the wilderness has its own story. The game does a fantastic job of not holding your hand and letting you explore on your own terms. This strikes a great balance between the large but often soulless expanses of Oblivion's Cyrodiil and Dragon Age's small but meticulous areas. The price you have to pay to take in these wondrous sights can be steep. The hack n' slash combat is little more than hammering on your primary attack while interjecting special moves when they're off cooldown.

    Divinity 2: Ego Draconis (Preview)

The sequel to the vastly underrated Divine Divinity, Larian Studios is back with Divinity 2: Ego Draconis. Divinity 2: Ego Draconis is the first role-playing game I've played in a long time that looks and feels like a "computer RPG," much in the vein of Knights of the Old Republic, but it was presented to me by developer Larian Studios on the Xbox 360. In this sequel to the vastly underrated Divine Divinity, the world of Rivellon is being threatened by a powerful warrior who controls massive armies of Dragon Knights. As a Dragon Slayer, it's your job to hunt down these overgrown lizards and prevent the planet from getting turned into charcoal; before you can accomplish this though, Divinity 2 quickly throws a few quick curveballs into the gameplay. During my experiences with Ego Draconis, I've come to realize that I'm a saint. While some role-playing games have an element of branching stories that will affect a cut-scene or two, Ego Draconis pushes the concept of choice-and-consequence further than I expected. If you're the kind of gamer that has loose morals -- you kill Little Sisters without thinking twice, horde guns from your buddies in Borderlands, or you're just a jerk to everyone in Mass Effect -- Ego Draconis will be a real challenge.
