For years, people have gathered around the television, USB-powered microphones in hand, to test their singing prowess across a wide variety of musical genres. Karaoke games like Karaoke Revolution track pitch and timing to rate how a singer is doing, but because rap songs involve more rhythmic speaking than tuneful singing, the genre has been underrepresented in such games. Enter Def Jam Rapstar. As the instantly recognizable name suggests, the game features songs from some of the most famous rap acts in the world, both past and present. The songlist is impressive, and the added dimension of lyric tracking allows the game to reward you for singing the right words. However, without the video recording and community-sharing features of the other console versions, the Wii version is merely a straightforward karaoke game. This makes some of the game's flaws more apparent, like the imperfect display and some questionable choices when it comes to what parts you do or don't sing on a given song. Def Jam Rapstar isn't the best karaoke game around, but its unique songlist still delivers a lot of entertainment. Any self-respecting karaoke game lets you get straight to singing from the get-go, and Def Jam Rapstar does just that.
Karaoke has never been my cup of tea. When people suggest a late-night trip to Lucky Voice and the idea is met with drunken cheers, my heart sinks like a limbless swimmer. Want to see my Road Runner impression? Just pull out a copy of SingStar and - meep meep! - I'll be over the horizon in seconds. Now, thanks to Def Jam Rapstar, I can honestly say I've lost much of my antipathy towards microphones. It's surprising really, because once you strip away the bling and the online community features, this is very much a Karaoke game - albeit one where your ability to sing in key has far less importance than normal. I can't even claim to be a massive hip-hop fan; when the kids at school were discovering gangsta rap, I had my head buried in mostly-rubbish Britpop (remember Cast? Me neither - I'm doing my best to forget). I've since broadened my musical tastes, but it's equally true to say that playing this has deepened my appreciation of the genre.Appearance-wise, Rapstar resembles a shinier, gold-tinged cousin to the usual sing-along setup. The official music video for your track appears in a window, with a bouncing ball skipping over the lyrics that appear in the space below (and above, if you're taking part in a duet or battle).
Some things are simply more pleasant when you're in the company of a friend. A round of pool, a candlelit dinner, a three-hour game of Monopoly - none of these things are quite so enjoyable if you're experiencing them on your Jack Jones. Now it seems that we can add 'rapping' to that list, because on the evidence of my experiences with preview code for Def Jam Rapstar, it's way more fun to spit lyrics when you've got a buddy by your side.At the outset, this link is tied to inevitable feelings of awkward self-awareness. As with any karaoke-like game, it takes a bit of time to get into the swing of things. As you bob up and down on your living room carpet, clutching the mic in one hand and gesturing wildly with the other, you begin to suspect that you might look like a bit of a twat. And guess what, you probably do. But hey, it's okay - because your friend / sibling / work colleague is standing next to you, and they look even worse. Look at Bobby over there, pretending to be Snoop Dogg! What a bellend! The thing is, you only look stupid if you feel stupid - and after you've run through some of the easier tunes, or the ones with which you're more familiar, you'll start to find your flow.
