Over the years, Dead or Alive has always struggled to be taken seriously as a fighting game both in hardcore competitive circles and with casual players alike. Honestly, it's hard to have any sympathy for the series considering DOA has always been known less for its gameplay and more for options that allow character's bust sizes to be increased by adjusting their age, numerous beach volleyball spin off games, and over-the-top breast physics. With features like that, along with gameplay that has always been far more simple than other 3D fighters on the market, most serious fighting aficionados have gone elsewhere to get their fix. Team Ninja sets out to change that in Dead or Alive 5 by tightening up the gameplay mechanics from previous games along with the usual fan service and eye candy. As such, DOA5 presents options and depth more in line with what 3D fighting game fans have come to expect. The game comes at an interesting time, as it is one of the last to be released within the current-gen fighting game boom that started with Street Fighter IV back in 2009. Whether you're into classic link-based 2D fighting games, air-dashing anime fighters, or even hardcore frame data-heavy 3D fighters, the genre offers something for everyone at this point.
Now that Itagaki and most of his crucial team members have departed the company, we were wondering just what the remaining folks at Team Ninja would be able to do with the Dead Or Alive franchise. In the past, Itagaki-san and his crew relied on heavily bouncing boob physics and the kind of fighting system that would send someone into a maddening frenzy if they didn't "get" the counters figured out just right. Apparently those who were left over decided to tinker with said formula, not making the focus so much on the boobs and instead relying on solid fighting action in general, where everyone could stand a fighting chance. On that note, Dead Or Alive 5 may not overwhelm you in the same way as, say, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, but this is easily one of the best entries in the series to date...and a fighter that shouldn't be disregarded. The main thing that weighs the game down is its own Story Mode. Set across a number of separate characters, this takes a while to get through, mainly because of the ridiculous amount of cut scenes and occasional lacks of logic.
"Oh my god!" screams Tina as she falls to her feet, pushing her heaving breasts together and panting. As she sweats on the floor, waiting for you to press continue, you have the option to swing the camera around, zoom in and admire the gorgeous character model. This is Dead or Alive 5 in a nutshell. It's taken what used to be a cheeky bonus you could ignore and now forces you to deep throat every sexual innuendo, suggestion and enthusiastic moan. It's a softcore porno that replaces the sex with fighting but the foreplay is all there - whether it's welcome or not.The glue which binds the game together is a campaign which sees 71 outrageously sexual cutscenes stitched together with fights. You'll watch new girl on the block Mila pick up a 'hidden' camcorder after she showers in the gym, and Zack perv on each and every girl whenever possible. Even the scenes with Tina and her father Bass feel incredibly incestuous.Naturally, the game also has the most terrible voice acting you'll experience this year. Tina's southern drawl, Christie's 'English' and Helena's faux-French all grind at the ears while they drone away the awful script.
You're too focused on something... it's all you can see. You have to have that one thing, you have to get to that one place, but you ignore everything else that's going on around you. When you get there, you can't find your way back. When you get that one thing, you can't seem to appreciate it. Team Ninja's return to Dead or Alive has shades of tunnel vision. The series expectedly returns with the girls, the guys, and the combo-counter combat. The last numbered entry in the series debuted on the Xbox 360 in 2005. Have Tecmo Koei and Team Ninja grown the series up in the past seven years or do they falter without Tomonobu Itagaki? Let's get the most obvious thing out of the way. Yes, plenty of females make up the roster on hand. Yes, you can play photo mode while two characters duke it out. The reality is that this is Dead or Alive through and through, so you know what to expect. In fact, if you played Dead or Alive 4, you know quite a bit about 5 already. Team Ninja hasn't added meter to their traditional Japanese 3D fighter: punch, kick, guard, or grab—rhat's all you need to know. DoA5 is still about combos and countering. Wall hits are just as crucial.

Sex sells. Just ask anyone with a marketing degree. But in the case of the Dead or Alive franchise, sex has been both a boon and a curse. After all, you can't create beach volleyball spinoffs or direct your ad campaign at oversexed college students if you want your franchise taken seriously. At long last, the folks at Team Ninja have seen it too, and the result is Dead or Alive 5, a fighter that's far more interested in beating you down than getting you off. Thanks to a number of key tweaks and additions, the fighting system is deeper and more balanced than ever. Mix that with exciting interactive stages, gorgeous visuals, and a comprehensive feature set, and you get a package that can entertain everyone - from the Monday night button mashers to the exacting tournament pros. During my first hours with the game, I was consistently surprised by the all-inclusive package of features on offer. The ability to download and upload replays, Facebook integration, and online. But the real gem here is the insanely deep training mode, which provides players with more detailed information about their moves than they've ever had before. Everything from frame data to player states and move properties are relayed in real time, giving advanced players the kind of knowledge they need to intelligently develop their play style.
The Dead or Alive series has always had an enthusiastic appreciation for the fairer sex. Dead or Alive 5 is no exception. Katsumi, Hitomi, Tina, and the rest of this top-heavy cast have returned as full-figured as ever. But DOA5's exaggerated brand of beauty is only skin deep. It's the foundation of solid fighting mechanics that gives this game its true appeal. Combat in Dead or Alive 5 is divided into strikes, holds, and throws. These attack types form an rock, paper, scissors relationship: strike beats throw, throw beats hold, and hold beats strike. Strike has a good chance at beating hold as well, since the defending player must execute the correct hold with perfect timing. Strikes also have the greatest potential for damage because you can combo them together--while the majority of holds and throws end with a hard knockdown. This damage potential is further enhanced by one of DOA5's two new techniques, the critical burst. Critical bursts are a new tool designed to extend combos and guarantee damage. Visually, they are almost indistinguishable from normal strikes, but successfully landing one puts opponents into a helpless state.
