Dance Central 3 Review

The Dance Central series has already established itself as the best dance franchise available. It's known for its gorgeous animations, wonderful dance routines that cater to a wide range of skill levels, and Kinect tracking that gets your whole body into the groove. And in these regards, Dance Central 3 maintains the excellence of its predecessors, leaving the basic gameplay untouched. You still perform a wide variety of fun dance moves in routines that are expertly choreographed to match the music that accompanies them. But it's the elements that surround the dancing that make this sequel a standout. An appropriately absurd Story mode and a diverse soundtrack that reaches back through time to work in hit records and dance crazes of the past few decades elevate the game. But it's the outrageous and frequently hilarious Party Time mode that takes this sequel over the top and makes it the best Dance Central yet. Of course, dancing is still front and center. A new difficulty level, beginner, keeps routines simple and lets even those who may have been intimidated by the easy mode in earlier games enjoy strutting their stuff.

Dance Central 3

Learning to dance is not fun. It’s a humiliating exercise in trial-and-error where failure and repetition power success. Eventually you come to a point where you’re suddenly good enough, and that’s when your grueling effort comes to life. Dance Central 3 mimics this real-life process as well as the Kinect-only dance series ever has, which is both empowering and exhausting – and not just in the typical way Kinect games make you tired. After the first hour or so, repeating routines in rehearsal mode starts to feel like a grind, largely because it’s something you absolutely must do to stand a chance at succeeding. Long term, and as I found my rhythm again, I remembered why I love Dance Central so much, not only as a Kinect series, but as a hobby. In the same way Rock Band turned your living room into a stage, Dance Central 3 transforms it into a nightclub, disco joint, or house party,. And like Rock Band and a dance rehearsal, this is starting to feel like a repetitive routine you’re tired of – regardless of its excellence.

Dance Central 3

Dance Central is one of the few series in the Kinect's line-up that fosters excitement for what the motion-sensing device has to offer. It's no surprise that Dance Central is consistently the best-selling Kinect game. Even with its success, Harmonix makes sure that the formula doesn't wear thin. Dance Central 3 is more than just new songs and new dances; it's easily the best entry yet. The core concept remains the same: You mirror the dancers onscreen. The characters' limbs will light up red if you are not matching up with them, offering easy-to-understand feedback. That part hasn't changed, but Dance Central 3 is better than the previous entries thanks to the song selection and numerous new modes. Dance Central 3 has more dialogue and cutscenes than any Harmonix game to date. The crews that you have become familiar with in Dance Central 1 and 2 are now members of DCI, Dance Central Intelligence. DCI is a time-traveling dance-crime fighting organization. The premise is absurd and sometimes hilarious, but it doesn't go far enough. The story isn't meant to be taken seriously, but Dance Central 3 doesn't fully embrace the silliness. Attempts are made at sincerity, but I couldn't help but scoff and continue flailing my arms about like uncoordinated maniac.
