If you thought a fighting game in which you play as mighty dinosaurs couldn't possibly be a tedious slog, brace yourself for bad news. Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D is a tedious slog padded out with recycled content. The fights are repetitive and unchallenging, linked by short jogs down corridors of jungle or rock. The visuals, at least, are appealing, enlivened by stereoscopic depth, and there's modest fun to be had in naming and customizing your chosen dinosaur, if a purple T. rex with stars on it gives you a giggle. But you won't be pitting Barney against your friend's creations; this is a multiplayer-free affair, with only item trading to show for the 3DS's wireless connectivity. Set in an age when dinosaurs not only ruled the Earth, but also when Cretaceous and Jurassic creatures mingled and did battle (sorry, paleontologists), Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D has you pick a dinosaur from four types: predator, hunter, charger, or defender, then run it through a series of linear, walled-in levels, punctuated with fights against other terrible lizards. These guys are the henchmen of the evil Arkosaurus, toward whose destruction you are working.

This prehistoric brawler offers up some impressive visuals, but not much in the ways of entertainment. When a friend asked me what I thought of Combat of Giants, I could think of just one word to describe it: heartbreaking. That particular descriptor stems from years of boyish dinosaur fandom and fascination. As a kid, I read voraciously about dinosaurs and eventually became pretty knowledgeable about them (though little of that knowledge remains twenty-some years later.) I still consider Jurassic Park a classic; I have been championing Dino Crisis since I was 15 to anyone who will listen, and still firmly believe that Capcom needs to reboot the series, even over Onimusha; I could probably go on. Yet when I first heard about Ubisoft's 3DS dino launch title, I didn't pay much attention to it. For whatever reason it's a rare occurrence that dinosaurs are given a quality presence in video games, and the little I heard about this one made it sound like some sort of a dinosaur fighting game -- something like Primal Rage, only geared for 10-year olds. Then I was told that Combat of Giants had some edutainment component to it, a fact that seemed to be verified in a few articles I skimmed about it; as a dinosaur fan, this naturally piqued my interest.
I've played every Combat of Giants game released so far. In fact, they're a guilty pleasure of mine. Something about battling dinosaurs, dragons, and mutant bugs is super appealing. Which is why I volunteered for Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D on the Nintendo 3DS. Unfortunately, this version feels like a stripped down, rushed out game, not the exciting challenging multiplayer games I secretly love. Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs is PunchOut with extinct giant lizards. Seriously. You go head to head against another dinosaur, dodging his attacks, and hitting him with combos when you have an opening. Certain attacks require you to dodge a certain direction, and the different dinosaur types have their weaknesses (raptors are easier to push off ledges, and an ankylosaurus can be devastated with a frenzy assault). The entire game is about recognizing the oncoming attack, and knowing how best to damage your opponent. Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D Video The reward for winning is getting to watch your dinosaur beat the ever loving crap out of the opponent, and as a bonus you get a random powerup item you can equip to make your dino stronger.
Of all the games on display at Nintendo's 3DS press event in New York City, there was one that walked up to the childhood memory gong and rang it loud and clear. No, it wasn't the newest incarnation of a beloved video game hero, or even a straight port of a long-dormant adventure. It was the one that vividly called to mind the fond childhood memory of taking two dinosaur toys, one in each hand, and then smashing them together while roaring at the top of our lungs. In Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D, we once again took on the role of a mighty lizard engaged in a fight to the death, only this time it had way better graphics. Who's Making It: Ubisoft is publishing the game and is proud of both the visual fidelity and the abundance of dinosaur facts it hopes will feed the dinosaur fever that most people contract for at least some of their childhood. What It Looks Like: From our time with the short demo, it seems that Ubisoft's pride is not misplaced. The dinosaurs move with lively and realistic gaits, and the animation is so solid that you'll have no trouble believing that this is what dinosaurs looked like when they walked.
