You can smell it in the air: summer blockbuster merchandising. This time of year means big action flicks, which naturally leads to mediocre action game tie-ins. Captain America is Marvel's annual comic book film to counter DC's Green Lantern for 2011, which means there's suddenly plenty of stars and stripes to go around when you look at recent game releases. As someone who's never been a fan of Captain America as a franchise—in fact, I'd say I actively dislike what I know of him, though I haven't seen the new film—it was a bit relieving to play Captain America: Super Solider on the Wii and actually have some fun while doing so. For starters, Captain Amer-...er, CA:SS? Hm. Let's just go with Cap-Am and save everyone some trouble, shall we? Cap-Am may have come out alongside the film, but its not a movie adaptation in any way. The game stars the red, white, and blue mascot, but the art style is clearly more comic than film, which was a smart decision given the limited power of the Wii console. Never mind his impossibly skewed body shape - he's a super solider, dammit. The plot, insofar as I can tell, is also not connected to the film apart from the basic concept of the characters and the world.
Captain America really savors a good beatdown. Once locked in a hand-to-hand fight with the foreign soldiers who threaten his patriotic ideals, he unleashes every punch, shield bash, and thunder kick in slow-motion to relish his physical superiority over his non-super adversaries. In Captain America: Super Soldier, you tear through opposing forces with xenophobic glee, and the exaggerated manner of your attacks lets you appreciate Cap's athletic prowess and diverse move set. But the fine animations come at the expense of speed and flexibility. Defeating even low-level enemies takes much longer than you would expect from the likes of The Star-Spangled Avenger, and his lethargic attitude becomes downright frustrating when you face off against large groups. Captain America: Super Soldier encompasses heroic highs and human lows, resulting in an uneven stroll through hostile Germany. Comic book detractors have been known to levy all manner of criticism at the medium. From saying that comic books embody adolescent power fantasies to claiming they distort the view of female anatomy, there are many ways to disparage these visual stories. But rarely do you hear that they are boring.
The majority of movie games are just awful. Still, I approach each one with an open mind, thinking it might be one of the shining few examples of what cool things a developer can do with a popular license if they just put some time and effort into it. Games like GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64, Aladdin for the Sega Genesis, or Spider-Man 2 for the PlayStation 2. Don't get me wrong, Super Soldier, developed by Griptonite Games, isn't a terrible game -- it's just so mediocre it almost hurts to play. Very loosely following the events of the forthcoming movie, Super Soldier follows the Marvel hero's quest to foil HYDRA's evil plans and go head-to-head with their leader, the Red Skull. This might sound cool, but the gameplay itself is just not interesting. I'm all for simple beat 'em up games, but here the simplicity feels less like an artistic choice and more like a cop-out. Even the slight RPG elements, which amount to earning experience stars for new Cap skills, are a bit too shallow to add much to the experience. I basically spent the entire adventure spamming the attack button. Fighting creates combos automatically, with no input from the player.
