If you've ever read a Captain America comic, or if you happened to catch the recent big-budget Hollywood film, you should already know what to expect from a video game adaptation based on the all-American hero. Nobody hands it to unpatriotic scum better than the Captain, and in this regard the game largely succeeds. Unfortunately, everything else about this package will most likely fail to hold the attention of even the most devoted Cap fans. The attack/counter mechanic employed during the requisite bad guy beat downs immediately invokes memories of Batman: Arkham Asylum. Just like in that game, you're going to find yourself wailing on the attack button as you await an icon to appear above a foe's head, signaling that they're going to make a move. In response, you're going to wail on the counter button until that enemy goes down, then it's back to the ol' attack button. Punch, punch, punch. Counter, counter, counter. As the Arkham games prove, such a simple combat structure can be engaging, but Cap's sluggish movement brings the whole experience down. Taken alone, the combat will be enough to satisfy a fan of the patriotic hero desperate to play as him, but if you're looking for a refined experience, you better look elsewhere.
