Bust-A-Move Universe

My usual review tack is to start with an anecdote or innocuous and possibly inane observation that (with fingers crossed) relates in some way to the game in question. After that I'll try to slip into the positives before slinging the dirt around – all in all, a nice, neat, little formula. However, I just can't do it with Bust-A-Move Universe. The only course of action that I will allow myself this time is to get the one huge, glaring, giant matzoh ball of a defect out of the way first. This is a puzzle game without multiplayer. It's peanut butter without jelly; Han Solo without Chewbacca. I can't fathom a single reason that a new Bust-A-Move would be released on a fresh system in this day and age without a versus mode. There are no online multiplayer, no local multiplayer, no StreetPass functionality – one is the loneliest number indeed. And there's really no excuse because, after all, this is a long-running franchise that has already established versus mode in earlier installments. It probably took Taito more work to design the 3D than it would take to code in a mode that's already been designed! Add the fact that it costs more than other versions that did include multiplayer, like options on WiiWare and XBLA, and there's very little reason to give this launch title a look.

Bust-A-Move Universe 3DS Review

Bust-A-Move Universe stops just shy of being an irredeemably terrible game, but it's certainly not good. If you've played any version of Bust-A-Move over the past 15 years or so, you should know exactly what to expect here: You control a dial at the bottom of the screen that launches colored bubbles at a descending wall of other bubbles, trying to match three of a kind to make them all disappear within a set number of turns. This is precisely what Universe offers -- nothing less, and very little more. Players can choose from two different modes: first, a standard story mode in which you advance, stage by stage, to an ending; and secondly, a time attack mode for seeking high scores. The one new wrinkle to the game is the addition of boss battles to the end of each stage of the story mode; here, you chuck bombs at a big bad guy until the protective bubble around him wears away. That's a new feature to me, anyway; I haven't really played Bust-A-Move since the PlayStation 2 launch, so maybe that's something more recent titles have added. I'd like to hope not, though, because that would mean Bust-A-Move Universe adds nothing new to the series whatsoever, save its perfunctory 3D graphics.

Bust-A-Move Universe Review

Ever since Bub and crew found second life with the Bust-A-Move games (they first appeared in Bubble Bobble on the NES), this series has seen some hard times. With a handful of lackluster iterations under its belt, does this new 3DS version have the moves to kick this fun puzzle franchise back into gear? The short answer is no. The gameplay itself (which involves aiming a pointer to shoot bubbles, trying to create chains of similarly colored orbs and clearing the area before time runs out) is as fun as ever. The concept is solid, and has even been improved upon since the original with things like using the L or R buttons for minor aiming adjustments, collecting keys to free your dino friends, and the addition of special bubble moves you unlock and power up by making chains. Bust-A-Move Universe Launch TrailerGiven this excellent framework to build on, you'd think the Bust-A-Move team would have knocked its 3DS launch title out of the ballpark. Unfortunately, faulty execution and clearly cut corners severely bring the experience down.
