Battlefield 3 Review

EA is at war. Everybody knows this, of course, as an unrelenting year of hype and a multi-squillion marketing budget has made sure of that.Like all wars, it's the people caught in the crossfire who suffer most - and in this instance that's the player. Battlefield 3 is often a giddying experience, but as an overall package it's marred by an insistence on some very unsavoury additions. Instead of focusing on what makes Battlefield such an iconic experience and refining it further, DICE became obsessed with its pursuit of Call of Duty and devoted time and resources into an unsatisfying campaign, the frankly needless addition of team deathmatch, and a woeful co-op mode.It should tell you all you need to know that DICE has titled the multiplayer DVD as disc one. This is with good reason, as when you hit your stride in multiplayer Battlefield 3 is simply phenomenal - it's an incredibly satisfying experience unlike anything else on the market, and in these wonderful moments of bliss the game's myriad problems simply fade away. The requirements for this giddy happiness might be too high for many, however, as I would say you need at least a full squad of you and three other friends to really get the most out of your time.

What can you do in 10 minutes? You could check your inbox, and maybe send an email or two. You could cook an omelette. You could watch Miracles by Insane Clown Posse, laugh, and then watch it again. You could lose your virginity. For Battlefield 3, 10 minutes is just enough time for a quick pout and swagger, another step towards the approaching showdown with Modern Warfare 3. You could argue that the game probably doesn't need much more publicity at this stage of proceedings, but hey - if DICE wants to show off its wares, even for just a brief moment, who are we to argue? The latest cutlet is a sliver of the single-player campaign, a wafer-thin slice of Operation Guillotine. Protagonist Sgt. Blackburn and his chums are hiding in a park in the North of Tehran, and are tasked with meeting up with another unit, Haymaker, before fighting their way further into the city, crossing a canal, and then securing a building. It's FPS 101, really, but that's ok - because this is really an excuse to get a feel for Battlefield's combat. The demo, which is being shown today on PlayStation 3, takes place at dusk. As the player follows his buddies down a hill, the Frostbite 2 engine does its best to show off its impressive lighting effects, with harsh city lights piercing the evening gloom.

Battlefield 3 is all about the shock and phwoarThe Frostbite 2.0 engine is the feather in DICE's cap, and the Swedish developer tends to wheel out some videos of its raw potential before allowing journalists a chance to see Battlefield 3 in action. It really is a sight to behold: when running on a PC, that's admittedly more expensive than my house, Battlefield 3's take on contemporary warfare is simply unmatched. As for the Xbox 360 and PS3 version, well, we're only allowed to see that via the YouTube footage of a US talk show. After numerous presentations of the single-player campaign, clearly going for a considered Generation Kill vibe rather than the bombast of a Michael Bay movie, DICE has finally allowed the world at large to sample the multiplayer offering, albeit with 24 players as opposed to the PC's maximum of 64.The map - Operation Metro - takes place in downtown Paris. In the single-player campaign this is relevant because the city has been invaded by Russia, but in multiplayer you don't need to worry yourself with messy contemporary politics - all that matters is that there are loads of M-COM stations scattered around each map, and you alternate between really wanting to blow them up and really not wanting them to get blown up.

Welcome to the Interrogation Room, GameSpy's signature pre-release game coverage format. Here, a GameSpy editor (typically one who's relatively in-the-dark about the game in question) grills his peers for information on a hotly anticipated game -- hopefully with more entertaining results than the typical boilerplate preview would provide. Will Tuttle, Editor in Chief: Well, the day we've been waiting for all these years is finally here, as we got to spend some quality time playing Battlefield 3 multiplayer. The word on the street is that developer DICE has changed up the classes for the latest entry in the long-running shooter series. Mike, can you detail what players can expect when the beta launches in September? Mike Sharkey, News Editor: Yup, we were among the first to get our hands on Battlefield 3's multiplayer, playing Rush mode in the upcoming shooter's Paris map. Evidently, the Russians and Parisians aren't getting along in the next Battlefield, and the U.S. Marines are tasked to step in. And yes, the word on the street is bond: DICE decided to combine the Assault class -- AKA the game's frontline cannon fodder -- with the Medic class.

Battlefield 3 (Preview)

Developing a big-budget shooter in 2011 is like performing in a soap opera; you've got winners and villains, people to feel sorry for, and it certainly doesn't hurt if you ham it up a little. It is important to back up the pomp and spectacle of this drama with some actual gameplay footage, though, so while EA CEO John Riccitiello was up on stage in New York telling advertisers how Battlefield 3 was designed to "take down" Activision's Call of Duty series, developer DICE was in London showing off the GDC 2011 footage which made such a splash to begin with.Powering the game is the Frostbite 2 engine, which has been expressly designed to do stuff with things like shaders and real-time lighting that my tiny brain doesn't quite understand. What I can tell you, with absolute certainty, is that if a developer has constructed an impressive new engine for a highly anticipated military FPS, one which combines swanky animations with top-tier physics and destruction, it's probably a safe bet to assume big explosions are a case of when and not if. In the case of Battlefield 3, DICE's latest manages to keep its impeccably modelled architecture out of an explosive blast radius for about five minutes - in the skittish world of the modern military shooter, however, five minutes feels like two weeks.
