Anno 2070 Review

With Anno 2070, a well-regarded series of strategic city builders goes rushing headlong into the future. No longer do you produce spices and dates, or ivory and jade. Such notions seem almost quaint in Anno 2070, where fancy health drinks and microchips are in high demand, and submarines scan for anomalies near underwater islands. The game's appealing futuristic vibe is apparent from the main menu screen, where you view the rotating Earth as if through a satellite feed, scan lines and static occasionally disrupting your view. But the joy goes far beyond the superficial. Anno 2070 is a detailed and daunting game that lures you in with its attractive trappings, and then hooks you with its interwoven social and economic structures. Sandbox urban planning and structured missions are combined effortlessly. It's a one-two punch of game addictiveness: "Slowly expand and improve my growing civilization" and "I'll do just one more quest before I turn in." That addictiveness is further heightened by Anno 2070's persistent nature, in which a metagame of sorts keeps the rewards coming the more you play. Your main structure is the ark--a floating base from which your helpful AI companion intones advice and updates.

Anno 2070 Review

You know what the thing about Porsches is? There are all sorts of iterative improvements on the same basic design. If you look at a Porsche from the 1960s, you can still see that today's Carrera Turbo, for example, bears a lot of the same hallmarks. The good thing about this, if you like Porsches, is that you know that iteration after iteration has allowed the manufacturers to smooth out and perfect the design of their car without changing it drastically. If you like Cadillacs, though, Porsches just aren't for you, regardless of how refined the design of the latest one is. Okay, so that's a long-winded way of getting to this: the Anno series is like Porsche – every title bears the basic hallmarks in the gameplay, layout, and look of its predecessors, only with more refinement and increasingly modern bells and whistles. "...You get to go crazy in your own world in Anno 2070's sandbox mode, and that is where the game really comes into its own." If you're unfamiliar with the Anno series, it's a long-running, (usually) historical, "supply-chain" RTS, in which you colonize islands and build up their infrastructures in order to produce a variety of goods for a variety of purposes.

Anno 2070 Review

Trading in gunpowder kegs and fields of wheat for missile turrets and high tech underwater algae farms, Anno 2070 brings the popular civ-building strategy series into the modern era with a much-needed twist. With humanity recovering from a global ecological meltdown that leaves much of the world's land and vital resources now well below sea level, you now have to weigh out both the environmental and economical impact of your actions as you build out your budding archipelago empire. While the fresh sci-fi vibe had me hooked from the get-go, it's the shades of depth 2070 adds to the franchise's already elaborate gameplay that makes the ebb and flow of expanding my ever-struggling civilization so captivating. In Anno 2070's plausible, not-so-distant future, resources and available land are scarce, giving rise to conflict. I like that the environmental theme is more than just a cool nail to hang the story on. Decisions you make regarding your colony's layout, the types of structures you create, and the way you harvest resources all have a dramatic impact on the gameplay. This creates a neat "cause and effect" flow throughout the game.
