Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon strays from its numbered brethren and with that comes numerous changes to the series. Since this is being touted as a complete rebirth of the series, it's nice to see Namco Bandai trying to reinvogorate it by implimenting changes that are sure to make current Ace Combat fans happy, as well as trying to hook potential fans. Assault Horizon definitely tries to take itself more seriously than previous Ace Combat games, with New York Times Bestselling military author Jim Deflice behind the game's story. You are a part of the UN Task Force that's on a mission to stop the growing terrorism in Africa. Throw in Russians and weapons of mass destruction into the mix, and you have yourself a recipe for a fairly interesting, albeit cliche storyline for a military game. The story segments are nicely done, as you often embody one of the main characters and are able to see events unfold right in front of your eyes. It's a nice touch that gives the game a personality. You're no longer just the pilot of a giant, metallic war bird, you can actually get a sense of who you're really playing as, but let's not beat around the bush here, the story is not what Ace Combat fans get the game for; they buy it for the high-speed, jet on jet warfare.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

After playing through the tutorial of Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, a certain fact dawned upon me: This is a Japanese game. Even now, it's still hard for me to truly believe this, given how Western the title feels. Clearly, Namco Bandai was intending to capture the eyes and thumbs of a lot of the gaming audience that has gotten into modern military action over the past few years. Fortunately, Ace Combat relies on aerial vehicle combat to differentiate itself from the primarily infantry-based titles that have been swarming the market. Set in the near future, Assault Horizon feels distinctly American in its tone, which will likely be a departure for those who've been following the series. Generally speaking, this decision was a wise one, though it's clear that its narrative follows the beaten path that many in its genre have tread. The characters are derivative, the plot is predictable, but it never crosses the line into cheese territory and never becomes annoying in any way. If weapons of mass destruction and evil Russian accents thrill you, then maybe you might care about the story. At the end of the day, though, like most games of this nature, it comes down to the guns and the explosions.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Review

It didn't hit me until I started getting into the current game, but it's been too long since we got an Ace Combat. Some of you may have got your fix with the PSP version last year, but for console gamers (especially PS3 centric ones), Ace Combat has been off the radar for years. So Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is a nice answer to our distress call, though it's not really the game you may have been hoping for. For the first time on consoles, Ace Combat moves away from the bizarre alternate reality setting and lands on Earth. Amid a largely desert and mountain based terrain are famous cities like Miami and Paris, all of which look gorgeous. You fly over and through these areas in a variety of aircraft, including dozens of different jets. Ace Combat keeps its more arcade-like controls (it's realistic, but this is not a flight sim by any means), and is easy enough to jump into, even if you haven't played many flight games. Ace Combat Assault Horizon Video Review Variety and simplicity define the Assault Horizon experience. Mission objectives are presented one at a time, and usually amount to "blow everyone up." Instead of surprise boss battles and bizarre storylines, Assault Horizon focuses on expanding its gameplay with Apache helicopter strikes, and bomber missions that feel lifted from Call of Duty (in a good way).

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Review

Boys have always had a fascination with planes. As kids, we'd hold our arms to either side and roar about the garden. We'd jump off furniture, mimicking take off. We'd bank, circling around swing sets; we'd swoop, ducking under climbing frames; and we'd weave about the legs of grown-ups shouting "NEEEEYYYOOOOWWWWW". We'd envisage imaginary opponents, chasing them to a barely audible background of "calm down Benjamin! You're going to hurt somebody! Again!"Ace Combat: Assault Horizon has the ability to make you feel just like this - more so, in fact, as an epic orchestral score punctuated with thunderous guitar licks doesn't follow your every move when you're zooming round your back garden. But much like tearing through your parents' garden parties in the summer, Assault Horizon comes with its own punishments, and it can leave you whining about how "unfair" it is in a similar way.The plot paragraph, then: things revolve around one William Bishop - a pilot with a chiselled jaw and bulging pair of biceps. The guy relied upon to save the day. Like Call of Duty, though, you'll play as several other characters along the way, including a helicopter pilot codenamed Shooter1, and the blonde-bombshell bomber pilot, Jan.

Review: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

We review the reboot of the classic fighter jet franchise. Does the new look help it soar, or does it crash and burn? As cool as fighters jets might be, they've always presented a unique challenge for game developers in one key regard: repetition. Simply put, you can only swoop around and shoot down so many bandits before it starts to get tiring. Seemingly aware of this conundrum, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon does more to mix things up than any game in the series. The first thing you'll notice is that the atmosphere is much more in line with modern military shooters like Call of Duty. The fictional nations are gone, and so are elements like satellite lasers (charming as they were). It goes further than that though, with even the story being lifted almost directly from the original Modern Warfare. Yes, you will begin by fighting bizarrely well-equipped Middle Eastern rebels who end up coming into possession of a nuclear-like device -- specifically the fictional Trinity device. Russian renegades are involved too, and at one point an ICBM gets launched at the United States. Needless to say, I got a serious case of deja vu playing this game. But for all its unavoidable similarities to Modern Warfare, it still does a lot of things right.

Review: Ace Combat Assault Horizon

It's impossible to deny the influence of Call of Duty. Every game publisher has analysts and consultants whispering in their ear: "Make your game more like COD and your Metascore and sales will shoot through the roof." It's clear that Namco Bandai heeded their advice when making Ace Combat Assault Horizon, and the results are not pretty. Assault Horizon's story bears some eerie similarity to the Modern Warfare series. Russians? Check. America being attacked? Check. Washington DC? Check. Remember that huge "twist" in the middle of COD 4? They do that one too. All this copying wouldn't be so bad if it was actually done well. Ace Combat's story is dumb. Not COD-style over-the-top dumb either. The narrative is told with an earnestness and lack of self-awareness that only anime-inspired Japanese games can manage. And that's really what the Ace Combat series is: a mecha anime with robots swapped out for planes. It's like they let Snow from Final Fantasy XIII write the script. Unlike previous Ace Combat games, this new game is set in the "real" world, with actual nations fighting and major cities as combat arenas.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon (Preview)

Is Ace Combat: Assault Horizon a surprise hit? When Jamin saw Ace Combat: Assault Horizon he initially expressed scepticism about the title - probably the millionth in the series or something - based off the franchise's dwindling reputation. Had the law of diminishing returns finally taken hold of Ace Combat, rendering the series a weak shadow of its former self?I won't lie: I definitely assumed as much but, much like Jamin, actually seeing Ace Combat: Assault Horizon has left me with a definite interest in Namco Bandai's fresh take on aerial warfare. One of the new sequences shown to me at Namco Bandai's London offices was a helicopter level, dumping the player into the sky shoes of Colonel Bishop (in his trusty Black Hawk) and having him clear out insurgents from a fictional West African town.Helicopter stages are all about air-to-ground combat - contrasting with the aerial dogfighting of the jet levels - and the Black Hawk can dish out a variety of devastating missile attacks alongside its bread-and-butter machine gun. You can also do barrel rolls to evade enemy attacks. Yes, barrel rolls. Yes, in a helicopter. It's also important to hover as low as possible in the Black Hawk, as taking to the skies makes you easy prey for rockets and AA emplacements.
