It's a tough world for iPhone docks; no longer is it enough to simply offer party-friendly playback, the near-saturated market demands slick styling and superlative features if you want to get attention. Xtreamer has certainly pushed the boat out with the iXtreamer, with space not only for your iPhone or iPod but an iPad too, along with an internal hard-drive bay, network streaming and more. Is the iXtreamer the last word in iDocks? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. Considering there are no internal speakers, the iXtreamer is a pretty imposing slab. Measuring 242.1 x 251.3 x 65.7 mm, it's finished in silver and black plastic with chromed highlights. Physical controls are limited to a power/standby button on the front. On top is the docking connector, with a suitably broad cut-out so that an iPad can slot in; a piece of plastic roughly the size of a PCMCIA card pulls out the side of the iXtreamer and slots in behind the iPad, giving it a rubber-padded place to lean against. Alternatively, there's an included dock adapter for your iPhone. A sliding panel can cover up the dock if you're not using it.
The iXtreamer is the latest in the range of Xtreamer media centres and stands out for the inclusion of an Apple dock. This means you can connect up devices such as the iPad, the iPhone 4 and iPods to display their content on your TV. Given that the iXtreamer is based on the same hardware and software as the other Xtreamer media centres, we're not going to repeat everything we've already told you about the interface and compatibility. In this article, we're going to focus on the Apple dock and what it actually gives in practice. The different compatible devices are listed on the Xtreamer site. We carried out our tests with an iPod Classic from 2007 as well as with an iPod Nano 6G. We stuffed our multimedia players with photos, videos (for the Classic) and music. Once connected to the dock, you can access a specific Apple device menu. Then the streaks running across the screen give the impression that the device isn't sitting in the dock properly. When you check, everything is well connected and the fault seems 'standard'. We thought we must be back in the wonderful era of the scart for a second there! Devices running on iOS 4 and upwards can be piloted from the iXtreamer remote.
