Colour laser printers were once seen a luxury, but they're now falling dramatically in price. As if to prove the point the Xerox Phaser 6500 can be picked up for around £175 online, which is cheaper than many monochrome printers. Despite this, it still offers reasonably fast print speeds. In keeping with the other models in Xerox's range of laser printers, this one avoids the boring black colour scheme that other manufacturers favour. Instead the main body of the machine is finished in matte white with dark blue used on the top section, which houses the output tray and control panel. The control panel is fairly basic. It's got a two-line monochrome display with a four-way cursor pad sitting next to it and a couple of extra buttons to handle basic print control tasks. Despite this, the menu system is reasonably quick and easy to use. The blue and white colour scheme sets the Phaser 6500 apart from other printers on the market. The bottom of the machine houses a cassette-style paper tray that can take up to 250 sheets at a time. Rather than having a secondary multi-purpose tray, there's a slot on the outside of the main tray to allow you to feed in single sheets or envelopes.
File the Xerox Phaser 6500/N ($399 direct) under well worth getting at the right price, with a combination of speed, output quality, and paper handling that will fit nicely into most micro or small offices or workgroups. Unfortunately, it's also pricey compared to the competition, which makes it a less attractive choice than it could be. Despite some significant strong points, the 6500/N's loses its luster when you compare it with the directly competitive Editors' Choice Dell 2150cdn ($399.99 direct, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed. The two printers are similar in many ways, sharing a 24 page per minute (ppm) engine rating for monochrome and color output, and offering similar results on our performance tests. (In fact both use the same engine.) But for the 99-cent additional price, the 2150cdn adds a built-in duplexer, which is a $100 option for the 6500/N. The good news for the 6500/N's paper handling is that aside from the lack of a duplexer as standard, it's more than adequate for a typical small office or workgroup, with a 250-sheet tray and a 1-sheet manual feed. If you need more input capacity, you can add a second 250-sheet tray ($199 direct). And, of course, you can add the duplexer if you need it.
