Western Digital My Book Live Duo 4TB review
Network attached storage (NAS) drives used to require the skills of network administrators to get them up and running. Thankfully, those dark days are behind us. NAS drives such as Western Digital's My Book Live Duo still take a little getting used to, but can be set up with no advanced networking knowledge required. My Book Live Duo is ideal for media streaming. It's UPnP, and can stream to any DLNA-compliant device such as a games console, TV or media player. Our smart TV picked it up without difficulty. You can also access your media through iOS or Android mobile devices using downloadable apps. It's easy to do, and puts your media right in your hand. There's an iTunes server for music streaming, but due to changes in the way iTunes works, it can't stream movies to recent versions. After signing up for a WD 2go account, you can access your files over the internet. The drive's two 2TB drives are pre-configured as a spanned volume, but you can reformat in a mirrored array if you wish, halving the storage space but protecting your data against drive failure. It's Time Machine and FTP compatible too.
Western Digital My Book Live Duo 4TB
The two-bay Western Digital My Book Live Duo 4TB covers the basics well, and does so for a lot less than most competing NAS boxes. Priced at just $380 (as of March 23, 2012), it's easy to configure, provides all of the sharing features that most home and small-office users need, streams media well, and has strong backup capabilities. It also provides access to files from mobile devices, and it turned in very good performance when reading large files. The My Book Live Duo ships in maximum capacity mode, meaning that the twin 2TB drives are configured for spanning, or JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks), where the network uses the second drive only when the first it full. This is a bit safer than RAID 0 striping of data across both drives, where one drive's failure means the loss of data on both. But it's not as safe as RAID 1 mirroring mode, which the My Book Live Duo also supports. Mirroring reduces capacity by half--to 2TB in this case--but it also enables you to continue using the box if a drive fails. Western Digital provides mobile access to shared files on the My Book Live Duo via its WD2go Web portal.
