ViewSonic VP2365-LED 23-Inch Wide e-IPS LED Monitor
The $349 ViewSonic VP2365 is a bit smaller (23 inches) and a little lower in resolution (1920 by 1080) than the three highest-ranked displays in our recent roundup of widescreen LCD monitors. Its physical appearance is unimpressive, too. But it did well in our tests of screen quality. Thicker than most displays equipped with LED backlights, the VP2365 has a nondescript matte-black exterior and antiglare screen. The five small silver buttons on the front, just below the screen, are easy to locate but aren't particularly attractive--and it can be difficult to tell what each button is for until after you touch it and the menus appear. The VP2365 is fully adjustable, and also includes a handy four-port USB hub. Its connections are limited to the basic DVI and VGA alternatives. In our screen-performance assessment, the VP2365 did well. Our jury awarded this monitor a Very Good score in text legibility, color quality, screen uniformity, and range of viewing angles. It received a score of Good in our motion tests. Offering solid performance and a flexible design, the VP2365 is worth a look if you want the wide viewing angle of an IPS panel, but you don't require HDMI or DisplayPort inputs.

But it does take a leaf out of Apple's definitive work on image quality. Specifically, Viewsonic has jumped on the IPS bandwagon.IPS or In-Plane Switching is the LCD panel technology favoured by Apple in many of its recent computers and gadgets machine. It's IPS that delivered the massive increase in colour quality and contrast the iPhone 4 offered compared with the 3GS. It's IPS that enabled the iPad to immediately raise the tablet industry's image-quality game. And it's IPS that ensures the iMac range offers the best screens in the all-in-one business.Critically, where Apple goes, others follow. With Apple shifting millions of IPS-equipped products, punters are not only getting a taste for decent screen quality, they've an inkling what to ask for. IPS is beginning to enter the public consciousness.
