Viewsonic VG2427wm

Joining the ever-growing field of 1080p-capable desktop monitors, Viewsonic's VG2427wm ($299 street) offers many of the components you'd expect to find in a business-class display. These features include an ergonomic stand, USB connectivity, and great text readability. The 24-inch, 1920 by 1080 resolution panel does a good job of displaying colors and grays, but emits a noticeable amount of backlight seepage. And while it is capable of displaying high definition content and has a 16:9 aspect ratio, it's missing the most widely used HD connection, an HDMI port. With its slim bezel and matte-black finish, the VG2427wm offers a sleek understated design that will look at home in any office environment. The 24-inch TN (twisted nematic) panel is perched atop a round black base with a telescoping arm that provides 5.3 inches of height adjustability as well as tilt and swivel capabilities. On the down side, you can't pivot the panel for portrait mode viewing. The upward-firing 2-watt speakers at the rear of the cabinet are certainly loud enough, but they put out too much treble and not enough bass and distort when cranked all the way up. There are four tiny silver function buttons, a power switch, and an LED indicator positioned along the bottom edge of the display.

ViewSonic VG2427wm

The ViewSonic VG2427wm gets points for a good assortment of ergonomic features--including screen height adjustment, 180 degrees swivel, and 25 degrees tilt. It also includes three USB ports and great movie and game performance. Yet, even with these attributes, we find it difficult to recommend the ViewSonic at its slightly higher than average asking price of $367. In contrast, the $300 Dell SP2309 with its 2,048x1,152-pixel resolution and the $250 Dell G2410 with its stellar performance are better buys. Also, we felt the ViewSonic's hollow and fragile-feeling chassis makes its price even harder to swallow. The 24-inch ViewSonic VG2427wm has a matte screen and a plain, black matte finish chassis. The base panel measures just more than an inch in depth, with a full depth of 2.6 inches with the ventilation system and connection options (that's average compared with other 24-inch models). The bezel measures a smallish 0.75-inch on all sides and the screen height is adjustable by 5.25 inches. When the screen is at its lowest point, there are four inches between the bottom of the bezel and the desktop.

ViewSonic VG2427

This 24-inch widescreen LCD offers sharp text and smooth adjustments. The VG2427wm, a 24-inch widescreen LCD monitor, performed well in our image quality tests. Text on a page of fonts of different sizes looked sharp, even when at a very small (6-point) size. The VG2427 also did a fairly good job of rendering color, though in one photo--a picnic scene with various red, green, and blue hues, we found the color to be slightly dull in comparison to the way other screens, such as the Asus VH236H, rendered it. In our motion tests, the VG2427wm stumbled a bit, displaying some just-detectable jittering of our test image. Though the jittering was slight, it was noticeable enough that active gamers might find it distracting. The VG2427wm's 1920-by-1080-pixel native resolution theoretically makes it 1080p-ready, and well-suited for HD content. Unfortunately, the display lacks an HDMI input, offering only DVI and VGA ports. ViewSonic says that it intends the monitor for corporate and office use; but to take full advantage of its resolution, an HDMI input would seem to be a necessary feature. The VG2427 does include three USB ports at the rear.
