Verbatim MediaShare Mini

Networking home entertainment devices should be as leisurely as enjoying them. The Verbatim MediaShare Mini ($85, street), a non-threatening dink of a device without flair or excess, looks like the perfect plug-and-play box that wirelessly brings movies, music, and other media to your computers, game consoles, mobile devices, and more. Connect the MediaShare Mini to your router, drop your media files on a USB drive or two, pop the drives into the MediaShare Mini's ports, and get ready to stream anywhere. In many ways, the austere MediaShare Mini really is as simple and straightforward as it seems. However, due to its simplicity, something's definitely missing - and that something is storage. In other words, the MediaShare Mini is not a true NAS. Rather, it's on par with the Iomega iConnect Wireless Data Station (about $80 street, 3.5 stars), or Pogoplug ($70 street, 4.5 stars), which we preferred for its ease of use and vertical design. Still, Verbatim's MediaShare Mini is a competitively priced option for anyone looking to wirelessly stream or share home media files, particularly movies, from USB drives to multiple devices.

Verbatim MediaShare Mini - NAS server

The Verbatim MediaShare Mini is a stripped-down version of the Verbatim MediaShare, with a much smaller physical size, no built-in storage, and significantly slower performance. It's designed to host up to four USB external hard drives and turn them into a quick network storage option, with over-the-Internet media-sharing capability. While this is a good idea, the MediaShare Mini isn't a good execution of that idea. It's rather cumbersome to set up and use, especially for home users. On top of that, it's slow, especially compared with full-size NAS servers. In our testing, it didn't support 3TB external hard drives, either. At a street price of just around $50, however, it could be a fun device for those who want to enter the realm of network storage and media streaming and sharing. If you want more features or something that's easier to use, however, we'd also recommend the Synology USB Station 2 or the Iomega iConnect. Measuring 6.4x6.4x3.5 inches and weighing merely 1.2 pounds, the Verbatim MediaShare Mini, as the name suggests, is very compact. It's just about the size of a pack of playing cards, except it's completely square.
