A year after the very successful Crossfade LPs, V-Moda has launched a second model that resembles them but as on-ears: the M80s. They’re a different size but it's not all about appearance… The Crossfade LPs proved comfortable and so are the M80s. Very similar in many ways, on the new model the headphones are smaller and no longer fit around the ear but rather sit on them. The arch has also been lightened but remains comfortable. Overall, on the head, there isn't much change in terms of comfort and it’s even astonishing to feel so much at ease with a par of on-ears. Only Bose manages to do better with its ultra flexible padding. The accessories that come with the M80s are the same as those for the LPs. The still semi-rigid case has been reworked for the new size but is otherwise the same with the same wires (standard and hands-free), still covered in Kevlar. You get a full box with the M80s then, which is fine except for one detail, already mentioned with the LPs: you can’t fold the headphones up to tuck them away in your bag. They’re solid but take up more room than they could. We might have expected the M80s to give a downsized version of the sound on the LPs, but the reality is different.
There's an undeniable vampire theme lurking just below the surface of the V-Moda Crossfade M-80 headphones, whether it be the black-and-red color scheme, the \"immortal life” fifty-percent-off replacement plan, or the goth-looking models on V-Moda's product page. If you like vampires, that's good news, and if you don't, well, they just look like cool headphones. But at $230 (direct), they'd better sound excellent, too. At moderate volumes, the M-80, a supra-aural headphone pair that sits on your ear instead of sealing around it, offers enjoyable audio performance. It can be a tad bright, but there's a healthy amount bass to even things out. At high volumes, however, distortion sets in on deep bass, which, at this price, shouldn't happen. DesignNot your standard headphone look, the Crossfade M-80 earcups, which rest on your ears and have plush cushioning on the inside, are shaped like hexagons. The M-80 comes in two color schemes: black with red highlights, or all-black (referred to as \"shadow” by V-Moda). The audio cable not only features Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch controls for making and receiving calls and playback navigation, it's detachable.
