Tritton AX Pro

The surround sound experience typically requires five speakers and one subwoofer to produce a field of sound that completely surrounds you. This is a very difficult thing to get just right, because it requires optimal speaker placement and acoustics to make the sound reflect correctly. It's also nearly impossible with headphones, but Tritton is trying hard with the AX Pro ($169.99 list), a gaming headset with multiple drivers in each ear to replicate the surround sound experience. While the headset technically handles 5.1 channels, it simply doesn't produce the imaging expected of a surround sound installation. Overall, audio quality is very good, but between underwhelming surround sound and the mind-boggling number of cords and connectors you need to get it to work, this headset is too expensive and complicated. DesignCalling the AX Pro complicated is actually an understatement. To get the headset running with any device, you need to assemble at least three parts. There are the headphones, the microphone, the headphone cable, the Dolby digital box, the power cable, and the audio cable. What pushes the AX Pro into ridiculous territory is that the power cable has two plugs: one for the Dolby box and one for the headset itself; that's too much.

Tritton AX Pro Dolby 5.1 Headphones review

The Tritton AX Pro surround sound headphones ship with their own Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder module and employ a quartet of dedicated channel drivers in each ear cup. Peel away one of the felt pads and you'll uncover a pair of 30mm drivers, one for the front left/right and the other for a surround channel, plus a 23mm driver for the centre and a large 40mm driver to handle the .1 LFE. The system is compatible with any surround sound source. Run an optical lead from your chosen component into the AX pro DD5.1 decoder; this then feeds the speaker drivers via a 4m cable. The AX Pro headphones are well built and substantial, with firm padded cups and head rail. The resulting surround experience is undeniably authentic. Dialogue is anchored mid-forehead while panned effects encircle your skull. Aggressive surround mixes are surprisingly intense. You can also adjust the volume level of each individual channel, controlled by a lit in-line adjuster. The Tritton AX Pro are at their best with games. In-game Dolby Digital processing dynamically steers audio effects based on what you're doing in the game.

Reviews: Headsets with Microphones

Like Saitek and Cyborg, Tritton is part of the Mad Catz empire. Although this particular brand may not be quite as well known as its two counterparts, Tritton makes high-end gaming accessories and peripherals, including the AX Pro headset. Due to the mass of cables included in the box, we were concerned this headset would be complicated to set up. Once we'd untangled what had inevitably become a giant knot of wires, we had no choice but to resort to the user manual. Things soon become clear, however, as the wires serve to hook up this headset to all kinds of different sockets and sources. The AX Pro can connect to a PC via an analogue connection, with a multi-cable mini-jack, via a digital connection or using an optical connection. It can also connect to the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles (with a microphone adapter for the latter). There's also a cable for hooking the audio controller up to the mains. Once you've chosen which cable to use, the headset is very easy to install: just plug it in, turn it on and it works, all thanks to the magic audio controller (see inset). While the main controls for the headset are found on the audio controller (volume etc.), there's also a selection of controls on the wired remote.
