Trendnet was first?to?market with a dual-band USB adapter capable of supporting three 150Mb/s spatial streams on both the 2.4- and 5GHz frequency bands, and now it’s first?to?market with a router that does the same. If you’re just looking for a fast wireless router, the TEW-692GR is a good choice and it’s priced right, too. But if you want a speedy wireless router that boasts all the latest bells and whistles, keep looking: This one doesn’t have a USB port, it provides very little in the way of quality-of-service tweakage, and we don’t like the way Trendnet implements guest networks. Actually, the missing USB port doesn’t bother us all that much. If you want storage attached to your network, a NAS box or a home-brew rig running Windows Home Server are vastly superior alternatives to plugging a USB drive into your router. And if you need to share a printer on your network, networked inkjets are incredibly cheap these days. Some of the other missing features are more serious: The router has the typical UPnP server, for instance, but it doesn’t come with the peace of mind that DLNA certification provides.
TRENDnet's 450 Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router (TEW-692GR) has generated more buzz than typical routers. TRENDnet states it is currently the only router on the market that streams at 450 Mbps on both the 2.4- and 5-GHz bands. The throughput is very good, but the feature set will probably appeal more to networking geeks who want the latest and greatest in MIMO antenna technology. Those same geeks may be disappointed: you can't flash it with DD-WRT or Tomato. For those not as networking savvy, the setup is dated and somewhat unintuitive. Newegg offers it for $136, although it's not as expensive as the Cisco Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Wireless-N Router ($179, 4 stars), which Newegg carries for $150. Netgear N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR4000) (our current 4.5 star, dual-band router Editors' Choice pick) is nearer to its price at $140. I encountered some setup and connection issues, but overall it's a decent router. The Double 450 Mbps HypeAs mentioned, the TEW-692GR is touted as the only router currently on the market to stream 450 Mbps on both the 2.4- and 5-GHz bands.
