Taiwanese firm Thermaltake is perhaps better know for making Xazer PC tower cases, heatsinks and power supplies than gaming peripherals. However, under the guise of Tt eSports, the firm has now released a whole range of accessories for gamers, including mice, keyboards and the Shock One headset. This is a chunky, bulky headset that can't exactly be described as discreet due to the huge light-up logos on each earphone and on the in-line remote. These features are certainly attention-grabbing but, thankfully, they can be switched off. The headset seems fairly sturdy and doesn't feel flimsy. In fact, with its steel headband featuring click-out size adjustment, chunky padding, massive hinges and semi-rigid retractable microphone, this headset feels like it'll stand the test of time. That's especially good news since the folding design makes the Shock One headset a portable product—a carry case is even supplied. The rectangular headphones come with interchangeable earpads—one set in a fuzzy velvet-like material and the other in leatherette. Plus, in spite of its imposing design and build, this headset is actually pretty light.
A few weeks ago, we reviewed the Tt eSports Shock headset. Oriented for gamers, the Shock did not disappoint and provided an extremely comfortable auditory experience throughout gameplay. Today we will be taking a look at yet another product from the Tt eSports series: the Shock One. Let's see whether this upgraded version of Shock is truly worth the price. Overall, Shock One fits the higher end mark, and up until recently, was considered the most advanced headset in the series. After the release of the Shock Spin HD with 7.1 HD, Shock One is now the second most expensive headset in the series that is fully capable to supporting the Dolby Surround standard. Thermaltake Shock One is made out of the high quality components and loaded with features to provide the consumer with greater level of comfort and compatibility. Due to the surround sound capability the headset is conveniently redesigned to have a USB 2.0 rather than usual 3.5mm audio input and output. The basic layout of the headset has retained the features introduced in Shock headset:comfortable velvet cushions, 10 level size adjustment frame, and portable low noise cancelling microphone attachment.
Just how heavy is 500g? Take our word for it: it's heavy. Not a reassuring, well-built kind of heavy, more an 'oh god my head's being crushed, get it off now' feel. Usually ear-covering cans feel comfy and secure, and whilst the Shock One isn't the most uncomfortable headset we've come across, it creates too much pressure to wear for more than half an hour. Also, even though your ears are fully covered, the Shock One certainly ain't noise cancelling. It sounds like you're holding seashells to both ears. Okay, so how's the sound? Not bad. It boasts a frequency range of 20Hz- 20KHz – the full spectrum of human hearing. But despite a better bass response than Sony's DR-GA100 set the Shock One loses clarity and high-end sparkle. The £30 Sony cans do a better job with the high mids upwards, which is damning for the pricey Shock One set. In-game, it's quite precise at pinpointing direction, but when things get chaotic there's a complete lack of definition. But wait! This headset comes filled to the brim with extras. There's a velveteen bag to carry it around in, and some velour ear pads that do actually make the headset comfier. There's also a software suite! I know.
It seems like these days it’s just not enough to master the Case-Heatsink-Power supply trifecta of PC parts. In the past couple years we’ve seen Corsair, Cooler Master, and now Thermaltake diversifying their hardware portfolios with gaming mice, keyboards, and headsets. The Thermaltake Shock One is the flagship of the new Tt eSports line of gaming headsets, and we got a chance to take it for a spin. The Shock One is, first and foremost, a well-built headset. None of the materials—from the plastic mesh on the earcups to the cushy faux-leather padding to the metal-reinforced headband—feel cheap, and the whole set has a substantial heft to it. It looks nice, too, with glowing insignias on the sides, and slick black and red plastic across the front and top. Heavy-duty hinges above each earcup allow the entire set to fold up, for easy storage. The set doesn’t fall short in comfort, either. The earcups are sort of an unusual trapezoid shape, but they’re big and well-padded and comfortable for long gaming sessions. The whole thing is a bit on the large side—great for those of us gifted with ample craniums, but maybe not the right pick for people on the lower end of the head-size spectrum.
