Synology DiskStation DS712+

The Synology DiskStation DS712+, sold diskless and and populated with hard drives, is a two-bay network-attached storage box that clearly anticipates the future. This business-friendly box can connect to Synology's five-bay DX510 external expansion unit to accommodate up to seven drives. If you don't need more than two drives right now but suspect that your burgeoning data set may eventually require a bigger storage system, that combination could make sense. Beyond expandability, the DiskStation DS712+ offers Synology's capable operating system and excellent performance. Among the DiskStation DS712+'s appealing hardware features are two front-locking drive bays; dual ethernet ports that support aggregation for faster throughput as well as failover (when one connection fails, the other takes over); three USB 2.0 ports for peripherals such as printers, additional external flash or hard drives, and Wi-Fi dongles; and a single eSATA port for fast external storage. Conspicuously absent is a USB 3.0 port, which the cheaper, more consumer-centric Synology DiskStation DS212+ NAS box provides. With a healthy 1GB of DDR3 memory and an Intel Atom D425 1.8GHz CPU on board, the DiskStation DS712+ delivered exceptionally strong performance for a two-bay NAS box in our tests.

Synology DiskStation DS712+

Synology's DS712+ is a small, yet powerful NAS best suited for the smaller end of the SMB. It's a great choice for business users (or home power users) who may not have much experience with storage devices, but that's not to say it's only for beginners. This NAS offer excellent performance and many advanced capabilities. Priced at under $500, the DS712+ offers excellent Read/Write speeds for its class, great recovery from hard-disk failure with Synology's proprietary Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) technology, and an extensive set of features, thanks to a number of available add-ons. HardwareThe DS712+ has two lockable drive bays, each supporting 3.5" or 2.5" SATA(II) drives (the unit ships diskless, so users must acquire their own drives). I tested the DS712+ with 4TB of storage, Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports provide network connection failover or link aggregation for maximizing bandwidth. Drives are easy to install and remove, although you have to position the enclosed drive key just so in the lock to remove the drive from the bay. The front panel has 3 LEDs to indicate status of each Ethernet port and the system in general (for example, a failing hard drive would cause the "Status" LED to blink red as an alert), a USB 2.0 port for attached storage and printers, and a one-touch copy button to copy data from the NAS onto an attached USB drive.

Synology DiskStation DS712+ NAS Review

Mobility always comes at a price, normally that price is speed or storage. Smaller devices just don’t have the storage capacity of the larger counterparts. The reason I make this statement is to point out a problem with today’s devices going smaller and lighter. The market has been driven to these smaller devices which tends to allow users to move from single workstations to multiple machines scattered throughout the house. The best way to protect and store your data with so many devices is to store it either on the cloud or on a network attached storage (NAS) device, unfortunately not all network storage is created equal. I bring you the Synology DS712+ NAS designed around protecting and backup your data in either a large home environment or a small/medium office. The Synology DS712+ features 2 drive bays either for redundancy or speed several USB ports and to connect to all of that the DS712+ is sporting dual network interfaces for taking advantage of fail over or link aggregation support. This is not the first NAS from Synol0gy we have reviewed. If you are looking for something that is larger and more expensive you might want to look at the DS411 +II we reviewed recently.

Synology DiskStation DS712+

The Synology DiskStation DS712+ server is an upgrade to the DS710+, and, in the Synology tradition, it's an excellent product. The new dual-bay server is now much faster and much better designed, supports up to 16 IP cameras, and can be scaled to up to seven hard drive bays, when coupled with a DX510 DiskStation Expansion Unit (not included), for a maximum 21TB of total storage space. The DS712+, however, also shares a few minor shortcomings with other Synology servers. These include the overly simplistic desktop setup utility, called Synology Assistant, and the primitive Data Replicator backup software. The server also comes with only one IP camera license, meaning you'll have to pay more if you want to use two cameras or more for a surveillance system. Nonetheless, if you're a tech-savvy user looking for a dual-bay NAS server that gives you much more than you'd probably imagine getting from a network storage device, then even with the relatively high price tag of $550, the DS712+ will make an excellent investment. If you want something that can offer even more storage out of the box, check out the four-bay DS410 or the five-bay DS1511+.

Synology DiskStation DS712+ NAS Review

With services like Apple's iCloud and Google Cloud Music, it's easy to assume that the future of our data is putting it safe on someone else's servers. There's another option, however, in hosting your own cloud - and backup system - with a NAS. Synology has made a name for itself with flexible, affordable Network Attached Storage that doesn't fall short on performance, and the DiskStation DS712+ is the latest to target home and small business users. Twin drive support, copious multimedia streaming options and the promise of super-fast data rates: there's a lot to like about the DS712+ on paper at least. Check out how it holds up in the full SlashGear review. Synology's design language tends toward the subtle, and the DS712+ is no exception: a 157 x 103.5 x 232 mm box clad in matte and glossy black plastic. Under the hood, the DS712+ is powered by a 1.8Ghz CPU and 1GB DDR3 Memory. The twin 3.5-inch drive bays are accessible from the front (and can be used with 2.5-inch drives too), each with an LED indicator to show activity. Each hinged bay-door has a lock, too, though it's more to prevent accidental drive removal rather than a real security feature.
