The market for network attached storage, NAS, has grown significantly over the course of the past few years. As that market segment has grown, a few names continue to get brought up more than others. Of those names, our focus of today is on Synology. While it might not have made a whole lot of sense in the past for home users to adopt some form of NAS on their local network, it (TM)s been an absolute necessity in the business world. There has been, and always will be, a great divide between the technology needs of a small to medium size business and those of an enterprise level company. While the technology differs, the same basic need remains the same across the board. Everybody needs simple and accessible storage. Synology has been a player in the NAS market since the early months of 2000. Based out of Taiwan, with North American headquarters in Redmond, Synology has built its business around the idea that NAS should be affordable for everyone, regardless of how large or small your needs might be. Being no stranger to Synology myself (this is the fourth Synology product we have reviewed), I personally utilize a Synology device at home for a multitude of personal uses.
If you're a regular visitor here at Tweaknews, you've probably read our reviews of Synology's NAS units. Several models have been sent to the lab for testing over the past few years, and they have consistently been among the best home/SOHO NAS products on the market. They are powerful, stable, feature rich, and operate at a quiet noise level. Their DSM interface is very intuitive and updates are released on a regular basis to further enhance it. Synology is beginning to make some changes to the hardware side of things as well, and it's evident on their new DS-212 NAS. This two-bay model adds USB 3.0, an SD card slot, and some slight changes to the enclosure that make installing and removing drives a lot easier. Let's take a walk around this NAS and check it out further. Synology America Corp. located in Redmond, Washington is the North American branch of Synology Inc. Synology has been delivering award-winning NAS (network attached storage) devices to small business and home users since early 2000. Synology is a network attached storage company, with all R&D focused solely on delivering the best in class network attached storage devices with forward-thinking features at an affordable price.
When thinking of NAS boxes we think of a few different brands of available remote storage devices. One of the more popular and prominent brands in the industry is Synology, a company which has blazed a trail with a reputation for having highly featured boxes that can be used for so much more than just a remote storage device. The units commonly carry many other roles they can perform such as media servers or even light duty web and database server duties. The unit we have today is one of the newest: the Diskstation DS212, which carries all of the previously mentioned functionality and more. This unit can range from the standard remote storage to a media server, a music server, iTunes server, FTP server, download station, database server, and even a web server. Now obviously this would not be possible without the horsepower to back it up, so this unit carries a 1.6GHz processor backed by 256MB of onboard memory to help with the computing tasks. This unit is a dual bay model which allows for RAID 0 and 1. This is great because it alternatively allows for a huge amount of storage by striping the drives, or for a redundant backup by mirroring the drives.
With the amount of computers in households rising at an extreme rate, an easier way of sharing files between computers is definitely needed. Normally you’d have to go about setting up shared folders across the network, which, as some of you probably know, is not the most reliable system. Well, today we have the Synology DS212 NAS to review which will definitely make your lives easier if you’re looking for a simple way to share files across your home network. The Synology DS212 NAS simply plugs in to your home broadband router and features two drive bays to store the hard drives you’ll be using over the network. With the ability to install up to 6TB of storage (2x 3TB HDD), the possibilities are endless. You could create a media server for sharing all of your films and music, or you could use the DS212 to connect to all of your home office computers to enable some simple file sharing functionality. The DS212 looks very sleek, and this year features a black exterior instead of the previous year’s white exterior, which you might have seen on the DS211. The Synology logo is features on either side of the DS212 and the entire unit is finished off in a rough, matt finish.
