In recent years network attached storage devices have gained in popularity as the number of computers per household rises. Once upon a time designed for the business segment of the market, NAS devices now offer households shared file storage and an easy backup solution. Synology’s DS110J is aimed directly at this market. However, not simply offering the basic tasks we’d expect from a cost-effective NAS, the DS110J also packs advance features we’d expect to find in more pricey network storage devices. I find it slightly disappointing that a ‘kettle type’ power cord is not included, as without one you cannot use the DS110J. Fortunately I have many spare; but for users less fortunate it will mean you will not be able to use it straight out of the box. The Synology DS110J NAS device itself is quite a sleek piece of technology. Consisting of a white and grey plastic design which is rounded at the corners, it will suit the aesthetics of most home offices. Although being made primarily from plastic, it still has a nice quality feel towards it with the solid construction and weighty feel.
