NAS Reviews: Network Attached Storage

Today we're testing the Synology DS1010+, a five-bay network attached storage server that's packed with plenty of extra functions. It could prove a serious competitor for the Data Robotics Drobo FS and Lime Technology unRAID systems we've also tested recently. Design & Hardware The DS1010+ comes in a pretty imposing cardboard box, with 32 x 34 x 38 cm of packaging protecting an NAS that's actually quite compact, especially considering it has five bays that can house either 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch HDDs. It's just a shame that the bays are made from plastic and that the drives have to be screw-mounted in place. The Drobo FS is better-designed in this respect, but can only house 3.5-inch drives, as an adapter is required to fit it with 2.5-inch models. The DS1010+ can be used with both sizes of drive with no adapter required, but you will have to fiddle around with screws in order to fix them in place. In fact, this is probably the only real downside in its design, as we otherwise found this NAS to be a real gem (see below). There's a good selection of connections at the rear, with four USB ports, two Gigabit Ethernet ports (for bandwidth aggregation) and an eSATA port.

Synology DiskStation DS1010+

Synology's DiskStation DS1010+ is designed primarily for small and medium-size businesses, but this impressive NAS drive is also well-suited for the ambitious home user not intimidated by its vast feature set. Synology's DS1010+ follows the current trend of many NASes in its class by offering capabilities that extend far beyond mere storage: The DS1010+ is actually a self-contained server that can be used for a variety of services like FTP, e-mail, media streaming, and more. It performed well in our tests, but the power users who are its most likely buyers may frown at its standard 1GB of RAM. The DS1010+ can be purchased with and without SATA drives. Amazon lists the price of the diskless model at $929, while the preloaded version comes bundled with five 1TB drives for $1,760. A combo diskless DS1010+ and the DX510 expansion enclosure (which makes for a total capacity of 20TB) retails for $1,350 on Newegg. The DS1010+sports two Gigabit Ethernet ports, 4 USB ports, and 5 drive bays. Drives in the enclosure are not behind a lockable door, but there is a K-Slot for on-site security. The DS1010+ also has an eSATA drive for additional expansion.
