SteelSeries Siberia V2 review

SteelSeries' Siberia headset has been available for the PC and Mac since early last year, but this new version has been revamped to suit iOS devices too. It now features a single 3.5mm jack, and inline controls for pausing your sounds, taking calls and adjusting the volume, as well as a retractable mic for calls. The Siberia V2's build quality is beyond reproach. Sturdy and solid, they're comfortable on the ears and remain so even after an hour or two on your head. The mic is perfectly positioned to extend in a hurry when your iPhone rings, and the inline controls are within easy reach too. Its well-cushioned cans are large enough to completely envelop your ears, cutting out extraneous noise and preventing sound leakage, which addresses our only significant complaint about the Siberia Neckband headphones. Audio quality is excellent and sound is beautifully shaped. With a decent enough song rip, you feel you're right in there with the band. The level of detail is impressive, with bass, mid-tones and high-end frequencies well realised and integrated. The bass is a little muddy, but not disastrously so, and unlike many headphones and earbuds, it's prominent enough without swamping the mix.

Product Survey: Headsets with microphones

Like Razer, SteelSeries covers the majority of gaming peripherals. The Siberias were one of the most reputed headphones for gamers. Lets see if mark 2 is going in the right direction. While in the V1 era, the Siberias were Icemat headphones (bought in the meantime), SteelSeries hasn't radically changed them. Still the suspended arch frame more traditionally seen with AKG headphones. Amongst the innovations, a microphone on a flexible stem that tucks away into the left headphone, like on other SteelSeries headphones, as well as the foam used for the padding which is done in imitation leather rather than velvet. They have also revisited the build, tightening the fit slightly; no bad thing for a gamer product. Lastly, and this is welcome, the set is comfortable. Though the choice of imitation leather is hard to figure. Even on open headphones, it's not the best. The worst fault on many competition headphones for gamers is the way your ears are stuffed with sound. Fine, we get it, but this isn't any measure of audio quality. Worse, while the effects from your game or film may unblock the ears at first, it soon becomes annoying. Too much bass can even be a handicap in games where you're trying to detect the enemy with precision.

SteelSeries Siberia v2 Full-size Headset

Gaming headsets are now as commonplace to the gaming pastime as controllers and keyboards. The number of online gamers continues to grow. Audibly, more gamers mean more "Fire in holes!", more "Launch Magic Missiles!", and more shouting of expletives than a Tarantino movie with every role played by Samuel L. Jackson. All the chatting and campaign planning requires at least a microphone. Might as well grab a pair of audio earmuffs to go with it, right? The multitude of companies producing gaming audio products certainly seem to think so. SteelSeries is one such company. They operate seemingly undercover. Even though you may not know them too well, the professional gaming circuit is replete with many happy SteelSeries customers... er, uh, sponsored fraggers. Their newest headset is yet another high-quality, no-frills offering where the price belies the performance. I give you the SteelSeries v2! Okay, so clearly their nomenclature is not where the genius lies. Be that as it may, the SteelSeries v2 is a mighty performer. After a completely mindless installation (gotta love plug and play), I fired up a few games beginning with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Shattered Horizon. I found in-game sounds to be clear and distortion-free, with an even balance of bass kick and pitch.
