The first thing you'd probably ask me if you were going to buy these active noise-canceling headphones is whether they're better than the the Bose QuietComfort 15 or Bose QuietComfort 3 models. The short answer is no. I found the Bose headphones slightly more comfortable to wear, and they effectively block out more noise than the Sony headphones. On top of that, I'm more partial to their sound, but those Bose models cost $300 and $350, while the Sony MDR-NC200Ds come in at $200. The price difference is significant, and enough to make the Sony NC200Ds a decent value by comparison. Not a bargain, but decent. What'd I like about them? They're relatively compact, lightweight and good-looking. In that sense, they're more like the QuietComfort 3s, which are also an on-ear model, meaning the padded ear cup sits on top of your ear and doesn't envelope like an over-the-ear model such as the QuietComfort 15. The build quality here also seems tough enough for daily commuters, and the headphones fold up to fit into a nicely designed protective storage case (it's included along with a two-pronged adapter for airplane use).
We've never been big fans of headphones that use active noise cancellation, chiefly because they mask the sound of aircraft engines, HVAC systems, computers, and other sources of ambient noise by generating noise of their own. A far better strategy, in our opinion, is to sufficiently isolate your ears so those sounds don't reach your eardrums in the first place. The best way to do that is to plug your ears with miniature headphones fit inside your ear canal. But some folks just aren't comfortable sticking bits of foam rubber or silicone in their ears, which brings us back to active noise cancellation such as Sony is using in its new MDR-NC200D headphones. These particular headphones are equipped with a pair of tiny microphones that monitor ambient sound and adjust the frequency of noise they generate to cancel ambient noise. Sony claims the headphones automatically switch between three noise-cancellation modes—A, B, and C—but you can't choose these modes manually. According to Sony, NC Mode A is tuned to the noise you'll encounter in an aircraft, NC Mode B is tuned to the frequency of ambient noise in buses and trains, and NC Mode C is tuned to the sound of computers and other machines typically found in an office environment.
It must be tough keeping up with Bose—the Bose QuietComfort 3 ($349, 4 stars) and Bose QuietComfort 15 ($299.95, 4 stars) are industry standards for noise-canceling headphones. Sony makes a valiant effort with its MDR-NC200D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones—which, at $199 list, are about $150 cheaper than the Bose QuietComfort 3. The unique MDR-NC200D automatically switches between three modes after analyzing your current environment's ambient noise. Unlike the QC3, the MDR-NC200D also outputs when the noise cancellation is not activated and its battery isn't in use. That's a good thing, too, because the MDR-NC200D distorts on tracks with deep bass only when noise-cancellation circuitry is engaged. This distortion only occurs at high volumes, but it shouldn't occur at all in this price range. DesignThe MDR-NC200D looks similar to the QuietComfort 3. They are both supra-aural headphones, meaning they rest on the ear instead of encircling it and sealing it off, as circumaural pairs do. The all-black headphones have very little visual flourish to them—just the familiar Sony logo, left and right ear demarcations, and ample padding, which makes them quite comfortable to wear for long stretches.
