Shure SRH440 Professional Studio Headphones

Shure has been producing quality studio headphones for a number of years now, and has also been popular with the iPod generation, but now the company's pro and consumer lines are crossing paths. The Shure SRH440 Professional Studio Headphones--one of four new pairs of recently introduced or revamped professional headphones--are affordable and sound surprisingly balanced. The SRH440s are intended for musicians in recording studios, but at $100, there's no reason music lovers who prefer headphones over earbuds can't enjoy them as well. If you're looking for subtlety and ultraportability, these may not be for you. The SRH440s are full-fledged headphones, and they're a bit bulky. Included is a large vinyl carrying bag and threaded 1/4-inch gold-plated adapter. The construction is decent, but the material flexes quite a bit, and that is where the bargain price shows. Longevity may be an issue, but how much wear and tear is inflicted ultimately depends on the user. The company's logo is emblazoned in silver on each earpiece and on top of the headband. The replaceable pads are black, oblong-shaped, and primarily made of vinyl, with a cloth interior sewn in.

Product Survey: Headphones

Below the SRH 840s in the product range, Shure offers the SRH 440s, a hybrid set that's half-portable, half-fixed. Shure is continuing with their rather offbeat product positioning – this is a set of monitoring headphones positioned to make inroads into the consumer electronics market. The 440s are the spitting image of the 840s. The main difference is in the L and R indicators, which are blue rather than black. Ah, but that changes everything! Same story with the ear cups that are a little narrow and so won't be comfortable on larger ears. The set comes with a 3 m (10 ft.) coiled cable – proof that the 440s aren't really intended for on-the-go consumers who use portable audio players. The cable is detachable and has a locking system. In fact, if you look more closely, quite a few details have been changed slightly, mostly in order to lighten the phones. The headband is thinner, closer to the head, and not as tight-fitting as on the 840. And of course the 440s are foldable, and they come with a case. Still, they fit better into the category of monitoring headphones than headphones intended for portable use (see inset). But what has Shure done here? It's hard to believe that a manufacturer who makes a virtue of midrange reproduction is behind these headphones.
