Product Survey: Headphones

But just what are the SRH 240s? The picture on the press release, showing the phones near an iPod nano, implies that Shure is eager to leave the professional world behind. They seem to have learned a lesson from the big hit their pro in-ear phones made on the consumer market. You can't exactly say that the SRH 240s are in the best of taste, visual design-wise. The sharp curves are nice, but the all-glossy-plastic look doesn't create an impression of quality. The detachable cable used on the 440 and 840 models is gone on the SRH 240, replaced by a standard attached Y cable. So the general public isn't interested in the possibility of replacing a damaged cable? Fortunately the headphones make up for it in the comfort department. The phones are light and stay in place on your ears without being too tight. The press release had warned us: “The SRH240 Headphones reproduce deep bass with clear mids and highs... ,” and it's true – there's no shortage of bass. Shure has even thrown in a little extra. Unfortunately, as you go upward in the spectrum, the response doesn't keep up very well. The midrange is clean but in the background, and the highs, while not actually loud, give the impression of being loud.
