Sennheiser HD 800

Sennheiser is one of the few companies around that refuse to run with the fickle demands of the market, with product refreshes that offer cosmetic changes and perhaps a minor tweaking to sound output. Instead, the Germans prefer to focus on research into the black art we call sound reproduction, and every five or six years, produce something like what we're seeing today. The HD 800 is their latest flagship headphone, and it's safe to assume we won't see a successor from them for at least another four years. Nor should we, after all shouldn't every manufacturer aim to produce a quality product that stands the test of time rather than designing on the principle of planned obsolescence? The HD 650, their previous flagship, was a headphone that remained at the top of Sennheisers lineup for nearly 7 years, although other manufacturers (arguably) eventually surpassed it in terms of sound quality. On a side-note, when talking about high-end headphones, it is important to note that there is not a lot of difference in sound quality, rather it is the sound reproduction that differs and no two headphones offer the same sound signature.

Product Survey: Headphones

Sennheiser often produces discrete, classy high-end headphones, like the HD 6xx series, whose design was in turn inspired by the Orpheus range. The HD 800 represents a radical change. Don't panic--these are no SkullCandy headphones--but Sennheiser has made a conscious decision to produce a resolutely modern product, with a high-tech look with lots of black and silver. It's huge though! Compared to the HD 650 which it was easy to forget about when you weren't wearing it, the HD 800's presence is all too obvious. That said, it doesn't feel too heavy once it is on your head, and the comfortable head band and huge ear cups add to that effect. There are also plenty of small details that make all the difference, that are all explained in the brochure. To start with, there are two metallic cable connectors which are clearly pretty tough. The internal padding and the underside of the head band are both detachable so you can wast them. Finally, as open headphones, they don't get too hot too quickly. I'll admit that it's quite a striking quest, but I can explain. For four years now, I've used Sennheiser's HD 650 as my own personal headphones.

Sennheiser HD 800

Model changes at the upper end of Sennheiser's headphone line don't happen very often. The previous flagship--the still available HD 650s--were introduced in 2003, and remain in the line. Their predecessor, the HD 600s, came out more than a decade ago, and are still popular with audiophiles. I've reviewed both, and they're both excellent headphones. But the HD 800 is something else again. They feature an all-new design that one-ups previous Sennheiser headphones. But that exclusivity is going to cost you a mint: the HD 800s retail for $1,400. The HD 800s' striking design sets them apart from every other headphone model on the market. But it's not just a styling exercise; the large earcups were designed to place the drivers farther away and slightly to the front of the listeners' ears than was possible in smaller designs. The precision quality of the earcups' plastic, metalwork, and the microfiber ear cushions certainly feels luxurious. The HD 800s perfectly distributed its 330-gram weight on my head, and ear pad pressure felt just right. The headphones are supremely comfortable. The HD 800s' patented donut-shaped transducer measures 56 millimeters across; Sennheiser claims it's the largest used in a modern headphone.

Sennheiser HD800 Review

Replete with premium components, proprietary technology and several industry firsts, Sennheiser’s HD800 headphones easily earn their place amongst the very best ever made. Retailing at just under $1400.00 though, the cover charge for this listening party is a little steep. However, if you want a jaw-droppingly amazing personal audio experience, these cans deliver and then some. Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat: The HD800 headphones are BIG. From the case to the cord, it’s clear that Sennheiser’s prime directive was audio perfection and, apparently, the manufacturer believes that size really does matter. The case for the company’s flagship cans is about the same size as a large shoe box (13.5”x105”x5.5). Opening the hinged case reveals a satin-lined, custom-cut foam bed in which the HD800’s rest snugly. Perched near our listening station, the silver and black HD800’s exuded a trophy-like quality that is sure to make any owner very proud, indeed. The cord for the HD800 set is 3 meters long and terminates on one end with custom, detachable stereo connections – one for each headphone. We know plenty of folks who have ripped headphones right off of their head by tripping on the cable.
