Sennheiser HD 598 Review

Sennheiser released added three new models to its HD lines late last year, with the HD 598 the most premium among them. Along with the cheaper HD 558 and HD 518, the HD 598 sported a newly touted technology which Sennheiser is calling E.A.R., short for Eargonomic (yes...we’re being serious) Acoustic Refinement. Though we won’t be dishing out any awards to Sennheiser for cleverly conceived marketing acronyms, we must acknowledge that whatever the company chooses to call it, it will probably end up sounding good. Sennheiser has a knack for making high-end headphones that make our ears elated and, as we quickly learned, the HD 598 are no exception. There’s just one problem: Their color.It is often suggested that the U.S. trails Europe big time when it comes to matters of fashion and design. Whether you agree with that notion or not, you’ve got to admit Europe tends to be pretty adventurous and open minded when it comes to that sort of thing. With that acknowledgement out there... well, let’s just get this out of the way right now: Most of us here at DT headquarters didn’t care for the color scheme of the HD 598.

Sennheiser HD 598

Ever since I got into the hobby of ear-sized transducers, I've been wanting to sample a high-end set of Sennheiser headphones. The Germans are known for their attention to detail and insiders go as far as calling them "industry lions". The high-end consumer headphone space is a relatively small one, with a handful of names - AKG, Beyerdynamic, Grado, Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Ultrasone are the ones that immediately come to mind. Sennheiser has an ultra high-end range of dynamic headphones that start from the HD 600 and move upwards in price. The HD 598 isn't quite as lofty, and belongs a rung lower, to a bracket I'm calling "mid-fi", although their price is on the higher side by Indian standards. The HD 598 itself is a replacement for the HD 595 which has been around for at least 4 years, and made quite a name for itself being a relatively nice sounding headphone that was not as demanding as the HD 600 on sources while being easy to drive. This made it popular for those who wanted a high performing headphone but not one that necessitated a headphone amp. Thus, for no reason of its own, the HD 598 has a bit of a legacy to live up to.

Sennheiser HD 598

The Sennheiser HD598's high-gloss burled wood accents, thickly padded headband, and ear cushions all lend a luxurious feel to the design. The tan-and-beige color scheme is a nice alternative to Sennheiser's usual gray or black finishes. In addition to the HD 598 ($330) Sennheiser introduced two less expensive 500 Series models, the HD 558 ($230) and HD 518 ($170). Sennheiser isn't the sort of company that jumps on trends; the goal for its audiophile-oriented designs is to make the most accurate-sounding headphones possible, and the HD 598 is the latest example of such thinking. The HD 598 is a full-size, over-the-ear (circumaural) headphone. It weighs just 9.5 ounces, but its mostly plastic construction makes it feel even lighter. We found the velvet ear cushions extremely comfortable, even over extended listening sessions. The HD 598 is among the most comfortable Sennheisers we've tested to date. The HD 598 features Sennheiser's Eargonomic Acoustic Refinement technology, which uses acoustic baffles inclined at a slight angle to guide the sound directly to the ears.
