The surprisingly awful HD 228 isn't the only pair of Sennheiser headphones to be endorsed by a superstar DJ as there are two more models in the range: the HD 218 and the HD 238. Will Sennheiser redeem itself with the HD 238 we're testing today? Time to find out. The HD 238 headphones have the kind of earpads often seen on headphones these days. Instead of the spongy circular sausage around the outer edge, the HD 238 have a partially-covered flat sponge surface that rests against your ear. This is more attractive and also more comfortable for supra-aural headphones, as the pressure is distributed all over your ear rather than just around the edges. That said, we still prefer the type of sponge used by Bose in its supra-aural headphones, which is more flexible than the material used here. The headband is perfectly good. With a good finish and decent design, it's comfortable to wear even after several hours' use. The earphones are hinged so you can swivel them round, which, although undoubtedly very handy for DJs, can't really be all that useful for listening to your MP3 player. The hinged design at least allows you to store the HD 238 flat in their soft case, although they can't be fully folded.
