We had high hopes for Samsung’s P2770HD. After all, its 23-inch little brother rose to the top of a sea of crappy TN displays in our December 2009 roundup. With its street price of $400, the P2770HD looked like a strong value for folks with non-critical applications. We stand by our opinion that twisted-nematic (TN) technology is inferior to in-plane switching (IPS), as well as our recommendation that you shouldn’t rely on a TN-panel monitor for critical applications such as photo and video editing (especially if your livelihood depends on it). On the other hand, TN panels like this one do deliver unarguably faster pixel response rates, which is great for gaming, and lately, they’ve become insanely cheap. This Samsung model also includes an integrated HDTV tuner, built-in stereo speakers, a Dolby Digital decoder, and nearly all the A/V inputs you could want, albeit only one each of HDMI, DVI, and S/PDIF on the digital side, and VGA, composite, and component on the analog side. As we found with the P2370HD, each of the P2770HD’s ports are set at right angles to the rear panel, which makes for easy connections—we’re really tired of turning monitors upside down to plug in cables.
We review the do-it-all Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD which doubles as a computer monitor and an HDTV. Television or computer display? You decide. Samsung's SyncMaster P2770HD takes advantage of the blurring line between supersized monitors and miniature TVs by turning one 27-inch, 1080p LCD panel into both. With the inputs and specs of a PC display and the tuner and styling of a television, we found it managed to borrow some of the best attributes of both, even if a few of our favorite frills - like swivel stands, USB inputs, and picture-in-picture - went missing in the process.Because televisions in this size would typically come in 720p resolution, the panel Samsung chose for the SyncMaster 2770HD looks more like it came from the monitor side of the supply chain than the television side. It offers 1080p resolution, 16.7 million display colors, brightness of 300 cd/m2, and 5ms response times, along with a dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000:1 (or 1,000:1 without the number games that come with the term “dynamic”). Oddly enough, the $50 cheaper 2700H, which has no TV capabilities, has a panel with far superior specs, which we would recommend investigating if you love the style but don't need the television functionality.
The Samsung P2770HD is the largest model in the P2x70HD range. We've already tested the 23-inch version, which is still probably the best hybrid monitor out there. Both have a 5 ms TN panel, a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a good selection of connections. However, the larger screen size of the 27-inch version could well make picture defects much more noticeable. Just like the P2370HD, the P2770HD has a large selection of audio and video entries. At the rear, you'll find HDMI, DVI and VGA connections, as well as a digital TV tuner, a SCART socket, a component connection, a headphones socket and an optical output, just in case the pair of integrated speakers aren't good enough for you. It would have been nice to have some kind of accessory to go with all that, like a USB hub or a card reader. This could also have pushed its score higher than just three stars. Colour reproduction isn't as good as we might have hoped. The 23-inch version displayed accurate default colours but the 27-inch model has a deltaE of 4. In general, colour reproduction issues are considered unnoticeable when the deltaE is under 3. The resulting colours are not awful, but picky users or anyone looking to edit photos accurately might want to try downloading a calibration profile.
The 27-inch Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD is a larger version of the P2370 that we reviewed last year. It's essentially an HDTV that can double as a monitor. It has nearly all the TV connections you'd expect and even comes with a fully functioning remote control. It can be found at major online stores for about $430, which is not a bad price considering it's essentially a 27-inch HDTV. While its movie playback performance is hampered by a slight greenish tint and its clouding is very apparent on dark screens, the P2770HD has solid overall performance that stands up well to some of the best monitors we've seen, such as the XL2370 or the larger 27-inch HP 2709. Design and features The 27-inch Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD is a larger version of the P2370HD that we reviewed. The panel measures 2.5 inches in depth and 26.3-inches in full width, compared with the Dell UltraSharp U2711's much greater depth of 3.4 inches and larger 25.4-inch width. The Samsung's bezel measures 1.3 inches on the sides and 1.9 inches on the bottom where a light-gray Samsung logo resides.
