Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD

If you've only got room for a PC monitor or a small HDTV, but not both, the Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD ($369.99 street) has you covered. This 24-inch hybrid display is designed for the desktop but is slim enough to fit on a kitchen counter or a bedroom dresser, and its sleek cabinet and stand will compliment any room in the house. Good HD image detail, crisp text reproduction, an integrated digital tuner, and a reasonable $370 price tag make the FX2490HD a good choice for basic productivity tasks and after hours viewing, but its uneven LED backlighting produces some splotchy blacks and colors appear saturated in all but one picture mode. As with the SyncMaster T220HD ($400 street, 3.5 stars), the FX2490HD uses Samsung's familiar Touch of Color design, only instead of the subtle Rose Black finish it is done up in an attractive hue dubbed Mystic Brown, which is actually more maroon than brown in color. The top and side bezels are only of an inch wide and are covered with clear plastic that extends 1/8th of an inch beyond the edge of the bezel to create a clear trim effect.

Samsung syncmaster fx2490hd led tv / monitor review

The Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD represents a type of product we haven't reviewed in quite some time. Over 5 years ago, the multifunction monitor was all the rage and all monitor manufacturers were scrambling to the get their option out onto the market. Well, skip ahead several years and Samsung is trying to give the cat another kick by trying to release a new version based on recent technology and feature enhancements. But what can we expect, is this a LED monitor with a TV tuner added or is it a slightly altered LED TV that has monitor functionality strapped onboard. Will it hit the ball out of the park or will it falter like a waiter carrying too many plates at one time. Well through this review I will definitely show you what you can expect and you can make that judgment for yourself. Page 2 can be found , or at the bottom of the page. Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD review

PC monitor and HDTV technology have been converging in recent years. The new Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD takes that trend to its logic conclusion. Superficially, it's a pretty ordinary 24-inch PC monitor, albeit a snazzy-looking example with an LED backlight. But it also packs a digital TV tuner and IR remote. So, it's the ultimate, two-in-one? Not quite. The panel itself sports an HDTV-aping 16:9 aspect ratio and packs a 1080p Full HD pixel grid. However, as far as UK users are concerned, the TV tuner is not HD. It's standard DTV only. That means you'll need an external Freeview HD box or similar to enable HDTV visuals. In that sense, the Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD is no more an HDTV than any monitor with an HDMI port. What's more, at nearly £400, this is one pricey PC monitor, especially given its TN LCD panel. For this sort of cash, you'd normally expect one of Samsung's spectacular PVA panels. A PC monitor that doubles as an HDTV is a nice idea for a home office where space is at a premium. In theory, the Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD delivers just that. It's a 24-inch PC monitor with a slick industrial design that apes Samsung's HDTV sets.

Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD

The Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD has performance that rivals the Samsung PX2370, one of the best TN monitors we've tested. The FX2490HD has some of the best movie and games performance we've seen recently; it also has a near full assortment of HDTV connection options, including two HDMI ports and built-in speakers. The lack of a DVI port means you'll need to do some finagling to get HDMI working properly on a PC and you'll definitely need to spend some time calibrating colors before the HDTV monitor is working at its full potential. Still for $419, Samsung offers essentially a 24-inch television at a very appealing price. The 24-inch Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD has a semi-glossy maroon chassis with angular corners and a clear plastic overlay on the bezel. With the overlay, the bezel measures 0.8 inch wide on the right and left sides. The initial depth of the panel is 0.6 inch, but it extends back to include the connection options, adding another 0.8 inch, for a total of 1.4 inches of depth. That's quite thin, considering the number of connection options included. The distance from the bottom of the bezel to the desktop is 3.1 inches, and the panel tilts back 10 degrees and swivels right and left 30 degrees, but no other ergonomic options are included.

Monitor Reviews: 22''-30'' LCD Displays

As we've come to expect with monitors like this, there's a rich selection of inputs and outputs. Component, composite and SCART video inputs join VGA, two HDMI ports and the TV tuner at the back. For audio, the FX2490HD has a pair of 2 x 5 W speakers, along with both a line out and optical audio output. To save space, Samsung has reduced the size of some of the inputs. You might not recognise the SCART socket, for instance, which has become a special proprietary mini-SCART input that you need to use with the supplied adaptor. This technique has allowed the manufactuer to cram all of these ports into a space no wider than 2 cm across. Once you've attached everything, you can close the case, to give the finish you can see below. It's not really a magic solution to the problem of trailing cables though, as the adaptors aren't all that impressive. Here's what it looks like when you plug them all in ... Moving down, you might recognise the stand underneath the inputs. It's just like the one that supports the and TVs, which certainly makes for a change from what we're used to on monitors, but it's hardly the most practical thing ever. It means you can't adjust the height of the screen, or pivot it to portrait mode.
