The Samsung ML-3712ND ($300 street) can serve as a mono laser printer for a small workgroup, and it's small enough for the role of personal printer in any size office. In either role, it provides solid output quality and decent paper capacity. It's not as fast as some of its rivals, especially considering its rated speed. The ML-3712ND, a mix of off-white and brown, measures 14.5 by 14.4 by 10 inches (HWD) and weighs 21 pounds, making it a perfect desk companion. The front panel is minimalist, with a 4-way controller with center button, several function buttons (On, Start, and Eco mode), and a 2-line monochrome display. It comes standard with a 250-sheet main paper tray and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, and has an automatic duplexer. The printer can accommodate an additional, optional 520-sheet tray for a maximum total capacity of 820 sheets. The ML-3712ND offers USB and Ethernet connectivity; we tested it over an Ethernet connection with a networked PC running Windows Vista. I timed the Samsung ML-3712ND on the latest version of our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at 8.9 effective pages per minute (ppm). It is rated at 37 ppm, which should be about the speed you'd get should get if you were to print text only.
