With the introduction of the Naga Epic, Razer has split its highest gaming mouse tier into two segments. The Mamba is still the top-of-the-line general-purpose gaming mouse, but it’s now joined by the Naga Epic, which runs the same high MSRP ($130) but offers features more tailored to MMO gamers. That’s a lot of cash—is the Naga Epic worth it? The Naga Epic packs many of the same “elite”-level features as the Mamba, including a 5,600 dpi laser sensor, a 1ms response time, and responsive hybrid wireless/wired control. Build quality is solid, as usual, and custom-color backlighting shines through the scroll wheel and thumb grid. So what sets the Naga apart as an MMO gaming mouse? First, there’s the shape: a higher-backed, more bulb-shaped design than you normally expect from Razer. If the Mamba is a Corvette, the Naga is a VW Bug. It’s a comfortable layout that leaves your hand in a more relaxed position for long gaming sessions. The Naga Epic has a degree of physical customization as well, in the form of three swappable pinky-side plates that let you change the feel and look of the mouse. The plates feel sturdy while in place, and are well designed; the mouse looks very nice with any of the three attached.
Razer had a reasonable idea when it designed the Naga Epic mouse for players of massively multiplayer online games. Games like World of Warcraft, Eve Online, and Rift tend to involve complex control schemes, so why not offer committed players a mouse with 12 programmable buttons for quicker access to those various commands? You need to have a special interest to choose such a mouse, due to both the learning curve and the Naga Epic's $130 price tag. We're also not convinced the button layout is optimal, and the overall features feel sparse next to those of the Cyborg R.A.T. 9. Still, MMO gamers might appreciate the Naga Epic's attempt to give them more control. We recommend this mouse only to MMO gamers (and possibly design professionals) with especially dexterous thumbs. This is not to say that Razer is relying exclusively on the Naga Epic's 12 thumb-side buttons to sell this mouse. A follow-up to the vanilla Naga mouse released in 2010, the Naga Epic is the wireless model, although it comes with a USB cable so you can use it while it's charging. The customizable 5,600-dots-per-inch laser sensor is welcome for fast-response gaming, particularly at high display resolutions.
To make the Razer Naga Epic mouse worth its high price ($129.99 list), you've got to love massively multiplayer online (MMO) games. No, really love them. As in: They're more an obsession than a hobby, to the degree that when World of Warcraft: Cataclysm came out, you waited at the store all night just so you could buy it first. Like the other products in the Naga series, such as the Razer Molten ($79.99 list, 3.5 stars), it has a thumb-oriented keypad with 12 buttons poised to let you access your equipment slots at a millisecond's notice. The Naga Epic has a couple of strong design improvements that make it an overall better mouse. Despite a few mostly minor missteps (aside from the price), this is a top-notch gaming mouse. Measuring about 1.6 by 3 by 4.6 inches (HWD) out of the box, it looks like a fairly standard Razer venture: tacky-feeling coating on its buttons and palm rest, shiny plastic on the left and the right, and no shortage of glow (by default, the scroll wheel and the aforementioned keypad cycle among the rainbow's various colors). Unlike the Molten, it's cordless, which gives you a lot more freedom of movement; and the central Razer logo does not pulsate in a startling, magma-like hue (or any others, for that matter).
