Razer isn't particularly well known for audio expertise. The Dutch make does however develop gamer products and headphones with microphones are part of this. The Megalodon is their heavy artillery: a 7.1 USB set. You don't need to look far to find out where the Megalodon design comes from. For the headphones and mic part they're an exact copy of the Carcharias headphones. And we rather like them. The Megalodons are mainly in plastic, but the black, good quality finish mean they don't look too low-end. You can't necessarily say the same for the huge remote that's wired up. While it doesn't look too low-end, Razer could have made more of an effort. It really is too big (almost the size of a CD), without any justification. At least it'll sit there on your desk ok. When you're wearing the Megalodons, you're aware of them but they aren't annoying. A more comfortable covering would have been nice for the ears however. The Megalodon remote allows you to switch from 2.0 to 7.1 according to taste and needs. As it's a gamer set, we wanted to try 7.1 first. We'll be clear about this. Forget the 7.1 mode. It's unusable. It's not that the spatialization isn't correct, quite the opposite, the different sources of sound are well positioned.
We recently took a look at two wired PC gaming headsets that rest in the midrange spectrum. While the P21 from Turtle Beach performed well as a PC headset, we wish it offered an option to expand to surround sound. The G330 from Logitech also performed well--not to mention it's one of the most comfortable headsets we've ever tried out. Alas, the G330 didn't offer anything other than standard two-channel stereo audio. Last March we reviewed the Razer Carcharias, and while we found them to be the best-sounding headset we heard in a while, we still longed for the ability to play PC games in surround sound. Enter the Razer Megalodon, the company's most ambitious PC headset to date. While it may not be ideal for the casual PC gamer, the Megalodon is an incredible sounding and comfortable PC gaming headset that lets you fully customize your sound. Right out of the box, the Megalodon reminded us of the Carcharias. You'll find both headsets carry the same basic design. The Megalodon is outfitted in a stylish all-black design--from the headband right down to the boom microphone. The ear cups are large, padded, and easily fit entirely over our ears.
