The BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth ($139 direct) is the latest edition in Razer's BlackWidow mechanical keyboard line. Razer decided to try and quiet the "clacking" noise of the other edition by using "Cherry MX Brown" key switches over the lighter "Cherry MX Blue," which, in my opinion, has made for a stiffer typing experience over the Editors' Choice Razer Black Widow Ultimate ($129 direct, 4.5 stars). The company has also addressed previous issues regarding the glossy finish, which tended to attract its fair share of fingerprint and smudge marks, opting for a matte one this time around. For those of you that aren't mechanical keyboard - or even keyboard - enthusiasts here's a word on the difference between these two key types. There are many different types of mechanisms that enable a key to function (i.e. be pressed down and pop up again). The Cherry MX Brown, used in the Stealth Edition, provides a quieter typing experience, but only slightly. In my opinion, the noise return is still greater than what you'd get out of a standard keyboard, and its application on the Stealth has left the typing experience a little stiffer than the standard BlackWidow, which utilizes Blue switches.
Razer is famous for its gaming gear and the BlackWidow Ultimate is one of the company's latest high-end keyboards that's designed for demanding gamers. The BlackWidow features a mechanical design and sports ‘Cherry' keys that, when pressed, produce a distinctive, and some-might-say annoying, clunk-click sound that mechanical keyboards are notorious for. As a result you won't be able to game with this keyboard into the early hours of the morning, if you share your room with another occupant. The keys are backlit however so you can game in a darkened room without any issues. Each individual key and indeed the whole keyboard feels incredibly sturdy and thanks to its wedge shape, you won't have to rely on pull-out feet to angle it. This is useful considering most pull-out feet will eventually fail after dealing with repeated shocks from hot-tempered gamers. The Razer offers macro keys, includes a dedicated gaming mode (which disables the Windows and Menu keys) and also offers media controls. The software for recording macros is a cinch to use so even the complex macros we recorded worked like a charm each and every time.
Mechanical keyboards in comparison to the regular rubber-dome keyboards have major advantage in terms of response, durability and comfort with the only drawback being the high cost. In terms of applications for gaming mechanical keyboards are clearly superior with the only problem being the lack of features such as macros or backlight. Previously, we have had the chance to take a look at one of the world's most popular gaming keyboards: the Thermaltake Meka G1. Today, we will be taking a look at yet another high-end keyboard: the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth Edition. The Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth Edition is a mechanical keyboard that is specifically designed for gaming. The keyboard makes use of the MX Cherry Black switches which are considered to be one of the best for gaming in particular. The major advantage of the switch is a relatively quiet performance as well as lack of the tactile response which allows for an easy continuous interactions with the same keys. However, unlike majority of mechanical keyboard, the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth Edition carries one major advantage: an elaborate macro system.
Mechanical keyboards, as opposed to gaming or even traditional keyboard, aren't what you'd call "trendy;" they clack like an old-style typewriter (remember those?) and sport the traditional key layout as opposed to the trendier chiclet keys found in the Apple Wireless Keyboard ($79 direct, 4 stars). The Razer Black Widow Ultimate ($129.99 direct) is part of the mechanical gaming keyboard class. Initially, I thought the constant clickety-clack of the keyboard would become an annoyance to myself and my coworkers. Instead, it became a satisfying background noise. Touch typists and those who are regularly glued to their desks will delight in the Black Widow's typing experience and extensive feature set. The Black Widow Ultimate takes a gaming angle in its mechanical keyboard design: The characters representing each key have a future-tech font style that's blocky, and the very structure of the sleek black frame is all about the angles. Unfortunately, the keyboard's glossy frame attracts fingerprints and smudges. Topping off the Black Widow's design features is the adjustable blue backlighting, which will appeal to the midnight gamers or late-night workers.
Razer, long known for its high-end gaming mice, has had sort of a slow start when it comes to gaming keyboards. Its offerings haven’t been bad, but the company hasn’t had a must-have product yet. The BlackWidow is Razer’s first. The BlackWidow Ultimate’s is a mechanical keyboard, like the SteelSeries 7G, but the keys have a little less travel and a very noticeable click when fully depressed, making them feel more like an old Model M keyboard. Whether you like your mechanical keyboard with or without a click is a matter of personal preference, but we happen to like ours with a click, and the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate feels great, especially for extended typing. However, beware: This sucker is loud! It shouldn’t be a problem if you’re used to the TACK-TACK-TACK sounds of a mechanical keyboard, but we wouldn’t recommend using it in an office environment if you’ve got touchy coworkers. The physical construction of the board is sturdy. It’s not going to beat the SteelSeries models in a bullet-stopping competition, but it’s still heavy and durable enough that it feels completely solid under your hands.
To a certain extent Razer has made its own life difficult with the BlackWidow Ultimate. This $125 mechanical keyboard offers an impressively responsive typing experience, but we don't find its backlighting or spare USB jack and audio ports enough to justify the cost next to the otherwise identical standard BlackWidow that costs just $80. Without the $80 model, we would have few reservations recommending the BlackWidow Ultimate to gamers in the market for a luxury keyboard. As it stands, we can only suggest the Ultimate version if you find backlighting and a few extra inputs to be worth an additional $40. Though the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate joins the standard BlackWidow and only two mechanical keyboards from SteelSeries in the gaming market, there's been an overall boom in mechanical keyboards in the past few years. You can find some recent reviews here. Of the keyboards on that list, two of them, the Das Keyboard and the Rosewill models, use the same Cherry MX Blue switches as the Razer BlackWidow and BlackWidow Ultimate. The Das costs about $130, and the Rosewill comes in around $100. For the SteelSeries keyboards, the 7G will run you about $150, and the 6GV2 costs $100.
