Intel's Atom platform has had great success in the netbook market, especially due to its low power consumption. As a result, manufacturers started introducing the Atom processor into different computer hardwares such as Tablet PCs, HTPCs, and NetTops. Now the Atom has moved into the Network Attached Storage (NAS) market. SoC are often used in budget and mainstream NAS products due to their lower power consumption, but they are not as powerful as a desktop processor based NAS. High-end NAS products like the QNAP TS 809 Pro will often use desktop processors that emphasize performance over power consumption. The Atom processor seems to be a perfect marriage of the two with its combination of high performance (due to its x86 design) and low power consumption. QNAP is one of the manufacturers that seized onto the Atom processor based NAS market. Their latest TSx59 line of NAS products, all based on Atom processor, comes in a wide range of storage capacities. The main differences between the different TSx59 products is the amount of power they consume and the numbers of drives they support (the x indicates the number of drives a given NAS can use).
Holy TurboNAS, Batman! The Qnap TS-259 Pro TurboNAS posted sky-high performance for a network-attached storage box. Granted, our test configuration of this two-bay NAS device ($600 sans drives, price as of 7/710) includes two 750GB Western Digital Black Caviar drives in RAID 0, which is optimized for performance, not data redundancy. But that generally explains only a couple of percentage points of performance (depending on the specific test)--and the TS-259 Pro was more than two times faster than the nearest competitor we've tested to date. This speed difference is visible--in my hands-on examination, directory windows snapped open with almost startling speed. Qnap asserts that the unit's 1.66GHz Intel Atom N510 dual-core CPU is the primary reason for the unit's speed. Moreover, the company specializes in enterprise-level hardware, and this model is at the low end of its business line of NAS boxes. As such, it packs two gigabit-ethernet ports, which allows MPIO (Multi-Path IO) for failover or load balancing; this way, if one ethernet path dies, you're still connected via the other. And, unlike your average consumer box, the TS-259 Pro offers MC/S (Multiple Connections per Session) to increase throughput by using both ports for traffic (we tested with only one connected).
Introduced at CES 2010, the QNAP TS-259 is a big step up from the previously reviewed TS-239 Pro and an excellent NAS server for those who are comfortable with networking. The server offers top performance compared with other dual-bay NAS servers we've reviewed. Also, its Ajax-based Web interface is more intuitive than that of the TS-239 Pro, which is already very robust and easy to use. The QNAP TS-259 comes with a well-rounded and generous feature set and is able to support up to two IP cameras out of the box. It's one of the few NAS devices we've reviewed that has dual-Ethernet, dual-eSATA, and a VGA port for an external monitor. If you can afford the hefty price tag of $600 (plus some more for storage), the QNAP TS-259 is well worth the investment, especially for home office or small business environments. If you're looking for a comparable but easier-to-use home NAS server, we'd recommend the HP MediaSmart EX495. Design The TS-259 Pro has a simple, yet well-thought-out and aesthetically pleasing design. It has two front-access removable drive trays and supports two SATA hard drives. With current hard drives maxing out at 2TB, the NAS server is capable of offering up to 4TB of storage.
