Psyko 5.1 PC Gaming Headset Review

Psyko! Crazy, mental ward patients with cats duct-taped to their feet as slippers... No, not that kind of psycho, this time it's psychoacoustic science, the science of sounds, and the basis of Psyko Audio Labs' name and technology. Psyko Audio is a new company based in Canada, and recently got a lot of attention at CES 2009 for their first product: a surround sound PC gaming headset system. The "Head Psyko", James Hildebrandt, has experience in acoustics, is an avid gamer, and has been developing audio technology for several years. So, a passion for games, experience of playing, and a solid understanding of acoustics. Sounds good to me. Okay, so in this review I'll be taking a look at Psyko Audio's first and only product, the Psyko 5.1 headset. This headset has been designed specifically for PC gaming, to provide a surround sound experience equal to what you would hear when listening to a home cinema speaker setup. Isn't that what all surround sound headsets aim to do, though? Well, yes, but rather than bungle around with the same tired design, Psyko have decided to use a completely new design that has never been done before.

Psyko Audio 5.1 Gaming Headset

For serious, competitive gamers, one thing is probably true about their computer gear: if it doesn't work exactly as needed then it's time to be replaced, or time to find something better. Anything to further gain an advantage over their opponent is their modus operandi. This leads us to the subject of this article, full surround-sound in a neat little headset package. Surround sound is critical for almost any game as it allows the player to keep aware of their environment, not just what is visible on their monitor. The initial few seconds in any engagement are always the most crucial, and with surround sound the player often gets them to prepare or react as needed. Getting that surround sound is another matter altogether. Options range from buying and setting up a full 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup around the PC, to using a 2.1 stereo setup with fancy software that tries to imitate spatial sound effects through stereo speakers. A better and probably cheaper alternative would be to simply make use of the home entertainment system's surround sound setup, but that is not always an option. Matrix decoding attempts to alleviate the issues of a stereo speaker setup, but it can't prevent the loss of information (audio) from occurring, only a full range setup with sufficient speakers will prevent the loss of audio.

Psyko 5.1 Gaming Headset

The Psyko 5.1 takes the idea of 5.1 surround sound in a gaming headset to its logical extreme. Not content with using two drivers to simulate 5.1 surround sound, the Psyko 5.1 actually packs seven drivers into the headset; five for directional sound, and two for bass. The Psyko isn’t the first headset with that many drivers, but the way it uses them to achieve its surround-sound effect is truly unique. It’s a bit complicated to explain, but we’ll try: When gaming on a traditional surround-sound system, when a sound is played on the front-right speaker, the sound from that speaker hits your right ear a millisecond before your left ear, from the front. With the Psyko 5.1 headset, the same bullet sound would also be played primarily on the front-right speaker, except that now it’s located on the right half of the headband. The sound then travels through an acoustic channel, and is piped into the front of both ear chambers. Because the sound originates on the right side of the band, it hits your right ear first, producing the same effect as a physical speaker. Sound from the rear speakers works the same way, but is piped into the back of the ear chambers. Very unusual. But does Psyko’s unique tech pay off?

Psyko 5.1 PC gaming headset

We first saw the Psyko 5.1 PC gaming headset at CES 2009 and were intrigued by the device's unique take on delivering surround sound. Instead of placing speakers in the earcups, the Psyko puts them strategically along the headband. There's no doubt the Psyko 5.1 headset is innovative, and we were overall impressed with the device's audio performance. While there are a few details we're concerned about, both competitive and hard-core PC gamers definitely have another legitimate option in the quest for the ultimate PC gaming headset. Design Before we get started, we have to mention that we've never seen a pair of headphones like the Psyko 5.1 before. Taking conventional headset design and tossing it out the window, the Psyko approaches surround sound from a completely different, out-of-the-box angle. By placing all five speakers along the headband, the idea is that sound will travel to your ears with natural timing delays, thus creating the most realistic experience possible. Sounds from the front speakers travel down a front tube, while rear ones travel down the tube that's positioned at the back of your ear. We really liked the unique styling of the Psyko 5.1 gaming headset. It's accented with gray and red highlights and is mostly covered in a smooth, rubberized plastic coating.
