Plextor PX-NAS2

How do you spell slow? P-X-N-A-S-2, according to Plextor. It’s not a proud achievement, but this one-terabyte network-attached storage device is one of the slower devices we’ve ever hooked up to our network. Transferring files is slow. Accessing the Web-based user interface is slow. Formatting the drives to a new storage type is slow. Slow, slow, slow. We almost couldn’t believe it ourselves—there had to be something wrong with either our test network, a full-fledged Gigabit network run through a single D-Link DIR-825 Xtreme wireless router, or the setup of the two 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 drives nestled within this two-bay device. The PX-NAS2 has two drive bays, but you can't remove the lower drive without removing the upper drive, first. Subsequent tests on other, speedier NAS boxes ruled out the first, and reconfiguring the PX-NAS2’s internal storage setup only brought additional heartache. You get three storage modes to choose from on the NAS box: a JBOD or a RAID 0 “striped” array, which deliver near-identical, slow speeds, or an ice-age-inducing RAID 1 mirror that’s the digital equivalent of taking the dog on a long walk.

Plextor PX-NAS2-1T1

Plextor's PX-NAS2-1T1 ($279.99, direct) is one of the cheapest SATA-HDD based NAS drives on the market. For the price, you get two 500 GB drives for 1TB of storage, but feature-wise it's not in the same league as more expensive business-class NAS devices such as the $900+ Synology DiskStation DS1010+ ($929 direct, ) or even QNAP's TS-259 Pro-2 Drive Turbo NAS ($599.99 direct, ). The PX-NAS2-1T1. It does, however, offer a robust HDD NAS option for home users looking for a higher-level storage server than USB-based devices like the ~$100 Pogoplug ($129 direct, ). Unfortunately, Plextor's software bundle leaves a lot to be desired. There are two other models is this line in addition to the one I reviewed: A $199.99 basic, diskless model, and a $389.99 2 TB model. I reviewed the PX-NAS2-1T1, which is small and lightweight (at least for a HDD NAS), weighing 3.5 pounds without hard drives. There are two USB ports (one in the front and one in the back), a Gigabit Ethernet, a reset button, and a one-touch copy/synch button. Four indicator lights on the front give power, system, HDD1 and HDD2 readings.

Plextor PX-NAS2

The Plextor PX-NAS2, priced at around $210 (storage not included), appears to be a good deal when compared with other dual-bay NAS servers such as the $300 Synolgoy DS209+. However, considering its lackluster performance, terrible hard-drive-bay design, and lack of features, you really get what you pay for. If you're looking for a dedicated NAS server to replace the basic network storage function ... Expand full review When we reviewed the Valkyrie Dual Bay NAS server five months ago, we thought it was by far the slowest NAS server we've seen in recent years. Now the Plextor PX-NAS2 has joined the ranks. If you're looking for a dedicated NAS server to replace the basic network storage function of a router with a built-in USB port, such as the Cisco Linksys E3000, the Plextor PX-NAS2 will get the job done. Otherwise, any other NAS server, excluding the Valkyrie, will make a better choice.
