Philips has taken its first steps to offering a 3D monitor with the new 273G3DH, a 27'' Full HD display which works with active 3D glasses and an external infrared transmitter. Unusually, although it relies on active 3D technology, it doesn't use Nvidia's 3DVision system. Will Philips' decision to go it alone pay off? Let's take a closer look. Like a lot of monitors we review, the 273G3DH largely relies on the inputs and outputs it offers to score points in this section. At the back, there are two HDMI 1.4 inputs and a VGA port. Although it doesn't have any speakers, there is a line out, allowing you to pick up the audio carried by the HDMI cable and send it to your headphones or a speaker system. That also means that the monitor can be used as an extra display for a Blu-ray player, IPTV system or games console, all of which would have been a lot more complicated without a line out. There are two other ports on the side: one for the infrared transmitter, which is essential for keeping the active 3D glasses in sync, and the other for recharging the glasses themselves. This system means the infrared transmitter is on the outside, rather than built in to the monitor itself like we've seen with recent monitors from Acer and Asus.
