Parrot Zik

The Parrot Zik seems to do everything. Wireless Bluetooth audio? Check. Active noise cancellation? Yep. Integrated NFC and touch sensitive controls that auto-pause your music when you remove the headphones? Of course. There's even a free app from Parrot that's extremely useful. However, one reason it's useful is that it's the only way to balance out the Zik's highly-sculpted frequency response. With so many bells and whistles, the Zik, designed by Philippe Starck, risks being a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. It's not the best-sounding, nor best noise canceling pair out there, but at $399.95 (list), it's priced like it is. So many products would be a jumbled mess with such an array of features, however, and the Zik manages its arsenal gracefully. Above all else, it's a beautifully, thoughtfully designed headphone pair. DesignFirst things first: These headphones are pretty stunning, with a luxurious combination of black leather, chrome, and a nice black matte surface. The ear pads are very plush, and for the first thirty seconds, they're the most comfortable headphones you've ever worn. Eventually, the underside of the headband, which can be precision adjusted and then locked in place, gets a little uncomfortable, putting some less-than-cushiony pressure on the scalp, regardless of adjustments.

Parrot Zik by Starck Headphones Review

They're wireless. They have touch-sensitive controls. And they look really, really sleek. They even come with an app. Those are just some of the things we love about the Parrot Zik by Starck, a $399 pair of headphones that screams state of the art. Read on to discover why the Ziks are a sound investment.Click to EnlargeWe can't get enough of Parrot's industrial chic design. You won't find any shiny plastics or flashing lights here, just good old-fashioned leather, metal and some tastefully used matte plastic. For example, the exterior of the ear cups are made of a matte black plastic, making them the Zik smudgeproof unless you have greasy fingers. The top of the headband is wrapped in supple black leather. Parrot's insignia is stamped matter-of-factly into the top of the band for a bold-yet-subtle accent. The tips of the headband are capped in silver matte aluminum alloy metal, as is a teardrop-shaped depression at the bottom. A single retractable alloy metal bar extends from each side of the headband to adjust the fit. The bar delicately curves in two places, creating depth and accentuating the large black ear cups. A tiny "by Starck" logo sits on the right side of the headphones, reminding listeners that this is the work of designer Philippe Starck.

Parrot Zik wireless Bluetooth headphones review

Parrot's Zik headphones are about the fanciest and most high-tech Bluetooth headphones you can buy these days and you'll have to pay a good chunk of change ($400) for the privilege of owning them. In case you've never heard of Parrot, it's a French company that's been around a while. It's created some sleek Bluetooth speakers, but in the U.S., at least, the company is best known for its remote-controlled AR.Drone that it frequently shows off at tech trade shows. Now Parrot has collaborated (not for the first time) with famous French designer Philippe Starck to create Zik, a set of headphones with a dual focus on technology and design. The headphones offer a wealth of features, including touch-sensitive controls on the right earpiece, active noise-cancellation, NFC capabilities, a removable and replaceable battery, and an app for iOS and Android smartphones that acts as a virtual control panel for the headphones. The headphones fold flat. (Credit: Sarah Tew/CNET) The Ziks certainly look -- and feel -- like expensive headphones, with sculpted metal, swiveling armatures, and luxuriously padded earcups.
